I have a Model 70 Classic stock (from a 30-06 circa 2008) and want to install a Safari Express 416 Remington barreled action into this slimmer stock. I just don't like the larger Safari Express stock. The Classic style stock fits me well and is more ergonomic than the larger Safari express.

The Classic stock has been pillar bedded. I will add stock crossbolts and glass bed the Safari action in.

Has anyone done this? How much wood was removed from the fore end?

You’ll lose a decent amount of strength with the thinner stock, I’d recommend doing this if you go that route:

I'd have a close look at the magazine well dimensions before I started the project. Also, I expect the barrel channel will be too small for the M70 SE barrel. I'd expect to make mods to the stock.

That said, I've had both M70 styles and have not been tempted to try this, so I am not certain of all the potential issues you will encounter.

It may be a better idea to keep it in the Safari Express stock and have it slimmed by someone like RJ Renner.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
