Good morning everyone,

I am planning on buying and old Mauser 98 Action, specially a spanish model, "La Coruña", but I'm have some doubts first on how I'll be able to mount a scope on it.

The fore "bridge" of the action, where usually is mounted the scope fore base, has a symbol from the gunsmith factory, which I wouldn't like to damage or even cover if possible.

Does anyone know how could I solve this problem? Has anyone faced this situation before?

I attach some pictures of the rifle and the symbol i refer to.

Thank you very much,

Carlos Monsalve

You could fit on a side mount. This is screwed onto the left hand side of the action. Anecdotally I have heard that you should use the long side mount other than the short side mount.
Google Mauser 98 side mount. I believe I have seen them on eBay and eGun.de

I have seen a lot of old customized mausers made by european gun smiths, these often has the forward scope base on the barrel just in front of the bridge. So its definately doable but probably quite expansive as these all were german hook mounts and probably has to be manually shaped after the barrel and then welded on. Like on this custom mauser in 9,3x62:

The front mount must be fixed to the barrel, just as you do for longer scopes.

FN Mauser caliber 340 Weatherby Magnum.

Something like this is done at the same time as a rifle is built and by an experienced gunmaker. Doing it later is difficult because a lot of things have to be changed on the rifle and his stock.

Thank you very much for all the information. It is quite interesting and useful!
Sadly, for this rifle, it's not worth to do that job, as the price and value is quite low. Maybe in the future, after working on it and restoring it to make it "custom" for me, it might be worth to spend some more money on a custom system.

Thank you very much again!

I'm currently solving a similar problem, but not quite. A Weaver bar is placed in place of the military Mauser 98k sight. I'll use Scout type scope with long eye relief, or collimator. May be a small bar for a light collimator may be placed on your rifle?

Jerome, do you think my last post in rough camping must maybe shift as an article?

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl
