Leopard Bowhunt

Screw that shit. That’s absolute fucking horseshit. Hounds are for following up poor shots and pussies.

I know you shouldn’t press “Post” when you’re pissass drunk, but just dropped him in the salt. Big 5/Dangerous 7 with a bow in 5 hunts and the Big 5 with a rifle (Frank 12) all in 8 hunts. Cheers

Why is it ok to follow a wounded cat with hounds but not hunt one with them?

Playing devils advocate - If you’re going to say hound hunting isn’t ethical and should be banned, shouldn’t it also be banned from use for all aspects of hunting including following wounded game? Why’s it ok to use on a wounded leopard or a wounded impala?

Congratulations on the completing of your Archery Big 5/Dangerous 7. Where’d you choose to chase the leopard?

There you go again. Using logic and defending hunters to use whichever method of take that makes sense for the terrain and conditions and the hunter’s ability.

I too would like to congratulate @Frank Cavallo. Hell of an achievement Frank.

@Frank Cavallo

Just saw you took your leopard with Tanya Blake as well!

I’m sure we will love to hear about your bow hunted leopard

I would struggle with this. I have hunted leopards with dogs and on bait. Unless you are seriously good with a bow, at night, then I would likely not do it. The blinds are usually more than 40 yds or if you hunting with dogs - when the cat sees you, he will peel out of the tree and come full bore.

Unless you are with a PH that has serious experience doing this, I would stick to a rifle....

Not dispatching any wounded animal by whatever means possible would be unethical.

Unlike rifle hunting (which I have for over 50 years), I consider killing any animal with a bow an accomplishment. Even a doe at 10y in a high fence, and I’d gladly buy you a beer. But I’d still call you a pussy if it was a treed cat.

Tanya is the cat woman! On my first lion (rifle Sango in the Save), Butch Colton called me the Cat Man as we saw 5 daytime leopards and came across a dead impala with still fresh unclotted blood coming from its neck wounds.

This was just an unbelievable hunt/sit we heard the rock rabbits around 1730, then him scraping and spraying his territory growling as he walked behind & away from us from one gomo to the other, as another young male was in the area. Then the growling got louder as he came back. Shook the stand at 10 y (similarly we had 3 shumbas triangulated around our pop up roaring in Sango in the still of night. That was fn amazing). The scraping & growling went on for 2hrs. Then hearing him lap up spring water from a spring in front of the tree stand was just surreal. I’ll play around on the plane back.

In the meantime just gonna fuck around for plains game. On a whim I brought along 6 heavy arrows and a second sight just in case we see a buff. Cheers

Just so I can keep track and stay in the good graces of the hunting gods I've met on hunting forums:

Hunting a leopard with hounds is for pussies
Hunting with a rifle is for pussies
Hunting over bait is for pussies
Hunting from a tree stand is for pussies
Hunting Africa is for pussies
Hunting high fence is for pussies
Hunting with a compound is for pussies that aren't man enough to use a recurve
Hunting with a guide is for pussies
Hunting from a blind is for pussies
Hunting at night is for pussies, even for predators
Hunting with certain calibers is for pussies
Shooting long distances at game is for pussies
Shooting up close is for pussies that don't know how to shoot long range
Hunting any kind of cat at all is for pussies
Hunting wolves and other cuddly predators is for pussies as well
.....wow, the list really goes on and on.

There are so many others I have heard, but gosh, it gets hard to figure out how a person can keep hunting these days and not be a big pussy to all the internet hunting gods and legends.

I’m a bowhunter as well, the last 3 seasons here in Texas all my deer hunting has been exclusively with a bow. Additionally it’s all free range or public land. I could slam someone who bow hunts in a high fence and call them a pussy but I don’t because it’s completely legal.

Now to your comment - again playing Devils Advocate but couldn’t the same be said about taking any shot where one isn’t 100% certain it would be fatal is unethical? Wouldn’t this mean any wounded animal in the result of an unethical shot; either because it was marginal, to far for the skill level of the hunter, the hunter wasn’t practiced enough, or any number of things that could be used as an excuse?

I understand wounded animals happen be it when bow hunting or with a rifle. I’ve lost animals myself with both a rifle and a bow. It’s not a good feeling and I do think someone should try to do everything in their power to recover and dispatch a wounded animal but the idea that shooting a treed cat makes someone a pussy is beside me when their chance of a charge is increased immensely, let alone with a bow. Furthermore many hound hunters hunt with hounds because they enjoy seeing the dogs work.

Earlier this year I killed a giant leopard on a daylight hunt from a blind. I wasn’t too far from where Tanya was hunting with her client. They had a good cat on bait for several days and saw it from the blind on multiple occasions, but for one reason or another they didn’t connect. Leopard hunting is far from a sure thing. Hunting them with hounds might not be for you, but there’s no need to slam someone who does and call them a pussy or think it’s anything less. Anti Hunters do enough of that for us for there to be more division.

Hunt how you want.

WOW. What a beast (my wife would feed him pop tarts).

My Great Pyrenees had him bayed before he climbed the tree. But I got him anyway.

Sadly, Bart was only 20 but he had fallen and got his horn stuck and was down all night and got sick.

I thought perhaps I had mistakenly posted this on that other website- Mauser Curmudgeon Central.

No reading comprehension there at all.

It’s a fucking quip. For fuck sake.
Keep em coming though. Just love hyperbole. I’m here all week…try the veal….

Cheers.

ps You may wanna try something other than missionary.

Well, I’ve reviewed your list and it appears you only got three right, and another couple that could go either way, depending on the situation.

I guess I’m not that desperate.

An apex predator in the tree pissing himself is one helluva trophy!

What no cage in the tree to get your species count up. Man look at those dogs go wohoo.

But rationalize all you want. The conversations on here are much different than those amongst PHs (not black listed or money hungry) and those in the back of a cruiser in whatever tribal language. People who actually respect and admire the animal. Not numbers.

Carry on amongst yourselves.

From up on your high horse, can you see how your own hunting doesn't pass scrutiny for many "real hunters". Or does your giant ego block your view of that as well?

You killed a CBL lion correct?

Wait, wait, wait, wait,…

This fucking guy is talking (vaguely and veiled) about ethics and a skewed widdle weapowd in a tree and cages and his big lion is CBL?
Well it’s a little more nuanced than that.

He’s killed a lion in Zim as well. So good on him.

But to kill a lion with a bow to “complete his big 5 with a bow” he had to do some mental gymnastics…

“Im not that desperate” or maybe he was

What’s worse in his mind? A wild leopard treed by dogs or a male lion raised and fed by humans, to be moved by a trailer and released for him to arrow upon his arrival.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
