I’ve just set up camp for the opening day of our deer rifle season in Indiana. I spent time with the family this morning and then headed over to a friend’s farm/hunt camp. I have this evening’s hunt and tomorrow morning before heading back to the house. Monday and Tuesday are work days, but after responsibilities are taken care of Tuesday I set off to drop the dogs in TN at another friend’s boarding kennel before making my way to the panhandle of FL where I will hunting St. Vincent Island for sambar deer (5 points to draw this year, but I finally drew!) After that hunt concludes it’s back north to TN to the family farm where my immediate family will come down and meet me for the holiday week. We plan to do more hunting there during that time. Two weeks packed full of adventures and outdoor living, a lovely break from the grind, and no part of this endeavor is terribly expensive in any way. A good, budget friendly excursion to get away and enjoy the Creator’s handiwork.
This weekend will be a bit of a shakedown for my camp setup for the island. Everything, including your drinking water, must be ferried over the few hundred yards or so to the island. No campers or truck bed camping unless you have access to some sort of landing craft, I suppose. Getting a dry run at camp will help me dial in for the island where hunting ends at 3pm each day. For the deer hunts in the past, which don’t limit your hunting hours as much, I just stayed away from camp all day scouting for sambar and deer. The pigs have been wiped out from the island, per the feds running the last deer hunt I made in January. I plan to do some shore fishing, reading, and generally relaxing after each day’s hunting, and it all comes across in my kayak, so dialing it in a bit is beneficial. However, comfort, of a rugged sort anyway, is higher on the agenda than in the past.
I’ll make no promises for the frequency or quality of my updates through this next couple weeks, but I wanted to return the favor of posts sharing member's experiences and take a whack at providing some positive content. The other effort is to illustrate that we don’t have to spend much money to have a great adventure in today’s age. Sure, I missed the boat on shipping off to be an ivory poacher, but I’m not going to be caught pouting about it!
