I need a companion rifle for the 500J

Gday Hunter,
How common are left handed actions? I would be interested in sourcing one for a custom rifle build. All my rifles are right handed which I shoot lefty but it would be nice to have a rifle built to fit me!
Good day, Alby.

I highly recommend Granite Mountain Arms in the United States. They make top notch forged actions, even in left hand.

280 Jeffery. I know it would be a bitch to do but I think it would be great.
Wow, that's way out there. Very nearly obsolete with every other 7mm available now. Must have been something in its day.

I am currently awaiting delivery of a 500 Jeffrey. My plan is to do a proper African hunt in a few years. I hunt for meat but I decided to do a full real deal African hunt somewhere north of me, perhaps Zimbabwe or Tanzania. As you can imagine accumulating resources can be challenging, but I've given myself three years to get there. Rifle builds can take a while and getting a permit here can take anything up to 7 months. However, I have another issue. I cannot go on this hunt with only a 500 Jeffrey.

I need a rifle that will compliment what I already have, or will have, but I have a few self imposed limitations.

It has to be a classic cartridge, but not so obscure that I don't have access to ammunition or even hand loading parts.
It has to have the ability to shoot longer distances.
It will be used to bring down large African PG.
Both rifles must be made by the same builder with the same stock design (classic English). Fitted to me.
Both rifles must of course be left-handed.

After long chats with friends I've narrowed it down to a few options:

300 H&H
338 Win Mag
333 Jeffery (pushing the obscure envelope)

What I don't want:

300 WM. I can buy numerous of these off the shelf right now. Very few LH around.
Anything above 338, performance-wise. I have a 375 H&H and a 404J. I'm purposefully trying to get something that fits the set and meets the performance requirements on African PG.
300 PRC. Too new. The numbers match the 338 WM though.

I'm open to any suggestion, regardless caliber.

Thanks
I’d go with the 300H&H with a caveat being you may need to reload . Failing that a 338 Winchester . If you can reload then you can really optimize the 300H&H . There are numerous types of .308 calibre bullets available. The 300H&H loves the 200grain pills . You can also resize 375H&H brass and use that although head stamping may be a problem if you take the gun&ammo across borders . Bertram in Australia make good brass for these rifles . If you can’t get loaded ammo or reloading is prohibited then go with the 338 . The 333J is a wonderful cartridge but to hard to reload and loaded ammo is nearly impossible to get . Given you like the classic calibres a 318WR is a magnificent fall back . But you need to be a reloader . Bullets from Woodleigh and Bertram brass . Cheers

The problem is I need to reach out 3- 400 meters. This isn't a feature of the 333 Jeffery. Also ammo availability gives me pause.

300 H&H does better in that regard. The 8x68mm also looks good on paper. (If anyone has experience with it, let me know)

I like the 338 WM as well but for the set, maybe having its origin in Europe might be a better fit. If nothings else lands then I would consider this.

300 H&H is a great option.

Hello! I saw your post from last year about a missing crate from your hunt in Moz. I am curious how that all turned out? We (my fiancé and I) also hunted in Moz in 2024 and the trophies are being shipped with Hunters Services Limitada. We have some concerns on whether we will get the trophies home or not. May I ask who you hunted with?
