We use the example of Kenya banning hunting in 1978, and the subsequent loss of 70% of the countries wildlife since that date. This is one of our strongest examples of using hunting for conservation.
Malawi should also be another example of a country we should be able to use. We don't use this example and it is probably due to a lack of knowledge.
I knew people who hunted Malawi in the late 50's into the early 60's, but they have long since passed away. I also remember friends of the family from Malawi that came to Tanzania to hunt buffalo with us in the late 60's for meat. I am not sure if that was because hunting had been stopped in Malawi at the time or if it was just easier to hunt with us.
Hopefully there are some people on this site that have personal knowledge or know of information in the public domain that can help us with this. As a group, can we answer a few questions:
When did Malawi originally stop hunting?
Do we have any information regarding wildlife figures and their dispersion at that time?
Hunting was reopened in 1987 and immediately shut back down due to problems. It was then reopened in 2009. The only operation I am aware of is a 1000 hectare high fenced operation in the southern part of the country.

Note, when I click on Cluny Safaris in the above post on AH, I am directed to a porn site. (They were probably hacked)
Do we have any knowledge of wildlife census figures now?
Evidently there are not enough animals to promote a hunting industry other than a 1000 H fenced area from what I am gathering.
My understanding is that wildlife is now confined to National Parks with very little living outside of the NP's. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or information concerning this?
Does anyone know anything else about hunting in Malawi?
All thoughts and comments are appreciated. Possibly we can show another example of how stopping hunting has depleted a nations wildlife resources.
