How many others map out their future firearm purchases?

I am a pure impulse buyer, except on customs, then I am a serious impulse buyer.
I buy what I like and rarely plan....
That is a curse and a blessing.
I always find something I like "better".
Anyway... it works.

The rest of you all have an addition problem, so I will help you out and tell you "go ahead, you owe it to yourself to buy that new Rigby...."

I've always liked to plan ahead and rarely make a spontaneous purchase when it comes to firearms.
I always plan. I never buy on impulse.

Average planning one year in advance.
I thing well of what I need and for what purpose. (I am in target shooting and hunting, two wide areas of interest)
Then I look on what is on market.
Then I make a list of few acceptable models
If possible I try to test it, it I find it within possession of a friends.
Then I buy.
The longest purchasing process, after decision is made on what to buy, stretched to two years, due to overall lack of 375 rifles on the market.
Next one in lenght, 8 months waiting for delivery from factory.
So, far, I believe, I never made a bad choice. never sold anything for not needing, not liking, or for being poor choice, or poor quality

these days firearms purchases are all about filling gaps or covering needs..
I hear you on that one. Just bought some rings for a 44 lever gun that lets me hunt with a rifle in my town because my part of the state has special rules related to population density.

I can literally walk 100yds west and hunt with anything short of a literal machine gun, but rules is rules.

Wow, @VertigoBE, that is some list!
I look out 2-3 years for custom builds. Spend the time gather components for the gunsmith. My last pair were built in 2018, so I am overdue:)

Here is a few "waiting in the wings", so to speak:

That's no longer a project or two as a hobby, that's an industrial level! What caliber are the top and the bottom ones?

I've always liked to plan ahead and rarely make a spontaneous purchase when it comes to firearms.

I've bought two this month but am already thinking about my next 3-4 purchases based on use-cases that are not currently met by my collection.

Whether it's chambered in a new cartridge, a new action type or even a new rifle brand that I do not own, these are always under consideration.

I tend to plan out which rifles I will be buying over the next 12-24 month window.

Currently on deck:
  • Merkel Helix (straight pull for driven hunt)
  • Sako 90 (mountain rifle)
  • Rigby Big Game (dream rifle)
I have owned three type of rifles; North American White Tail and Elk, African bolt action and African DRs. During my last three years I am 66, after owning many different rifles both bolt action and DRs I built a plan for the following I knew would last me to my last African hunt: First Brand Rigby London Made: Second Double rifle in 450 NE and Highland Stalker in 275 Rigby. Accomplished this year! Third while wanted just could not afford my final choice, 404 Jeffery in Rigby. Could only afford a very beautiful and nice Montana Rifke Safari Express with beautiful gold throughout in the 404. All three acquired with planning of two years

I used to have no map at all... for decades I bought based on finding a great deal or just seeing something I wanted.. there was no real plan..

these days firearms purchases are all about filling gaps or covering needs..

for example, I planned a big Idaho elk hunt last year.. and realized the only 300 magnum I had in the safe were a pair of wood stocked, blued (heavy) 300 H&H with more "Africa" oriented optics on them..

So I did some research, found a nice "mountain" 300 PRC rifle (stainless, synthetic, etc).. topped it with an appropriate optic (something that would make a potential 400+ yard shot easier), etc..
Yep, it's all fun and games on the flats until you hunt elk in the mountains with a heavy "African Safari" designed rifle, especially while carrying a backpack. Those that do will only do it once. That's why I carry my 8.5lb scoped Brownings in the mountains when after elk. And, they work really well when hunting PG in Africa.

I dont know about maping them out.
But I have ones that if they pop up in a cal I want at a price I can afford I will buy.
No 22-250 or 243 unless it’s a extremely rear rifle or extremely cheap
Now there are ones I plan to get like the umberty stalkking 1885 high wall I am not sure if I want the 45-70 or 303

I’m planned more than impulse purchased firearms. I planned for a long time about purchasing a Blaser R8. Most were purchased to fill a slot. I enjoy playing with different rounds. Working up loads, trying different bullets….
A lot of my handguns were “impulse” purchases.
I’m looking down the barrel at 70 and should be thinning the herd. I’ve sold a few but bought almost as many.

Here’s the extent of my thinking and planning …

My black gun AR days are most likely in the rear view - fun but prolly won’t stay with it unless I go back to the big gun ranch in Paulden, AZ . Hold.

Shoot driven partridge in the UK, Spain and Morocco with my deceased dad’s pair of Belgian Browning Diana’s from the 70’s - custom fit, love the engraving, it’s like the old man’s along every time. Don’t move the winner.

Shoot driven pheasant in the UK with a pair of Moruku Mark 11’s with 32” tubes - job done.

Georgia Partridge easily handled by Beretta Silver Pigeon III in .410/28 on a small, guage frame …all over but the cryin’. Doves get the Beretta 28 guage A400 auto … like sweet cream butter.

Turkey - Winchester Longbeard turkey gun - Thor’s Hammer, no reason to upgrade.

Ducks … for some reason Franche duck guns from Bass Pro fit me well and are cheap - stay the course.

Have the 375 H&H and 416 RM covered in New Haven Model 70’s - not going any more powerful - check.

Might buy a 450/400 3” DR after discussion with my PH next week in Limpopo. That’s in case my Ruger No 1 in that caliber doesn’t perform how I dream it will (unlikely). I have visions of a classic old Brit DR in 450/400 3” that looks “just right” but wife says no elephants and no cats. Open.

Most other calibers I build myself these days using a Remage system that works well for me - Zermatt/Bighorn action, Shilen Barrels, Manners stock. This includes a couple of 300 WM rifles I’ve built for NA deer and elk (and African PG!). Open, as needed.

For some reason I’ve always wanted a lever gun in 30-30, most likely Marlin. I’ll know it when I see it. Open.

You have a good eye! Top is GMA African action (has the.750” bolt) setup for 505 Gibbs, feeds 4 down reliably.
The bottom is a Kurtz length Mayfair action setup for a 7mm-08.
Steve
The GMA, is it 3+1 or 4+1?

Almost all of my gun purchases over the years have been spontaneous or I get a whim for something and then spend the next days trying to justify the cost before I buy it.. Sometimes my good sense takes over and sometimes it doesn't. And since most gun collections seem to have a theme or a common thread, I don't have a collection, I have an accumulation.
+1.

You just described me perfectly.
