I have been to Ferlach many times, owned rifles from Sodia, Outschar and Hambrusch. In my opinion wirh any gun from Ferlach you can‘t go wrong.

I would accept a Franzoj double with pleasure.
Thank you! My problem with fine rifles is I like the understatement, the utilitaruan, the simple, pragmatic. Example is case hardening over scroll work. Some wood figure (grade 5) over 8 +. Simple optics or iron sights over illuminated reticles and red dots. Wood-to-metal fit-up detail. Form follows function. I do not like AK or AR weapons for my own choice. Those Ferlach guns reflect ancient, ancient roots of Tutonic adornement. But the craftsmanship is beyond artistic.

Well made guns like virtually all Ferlachs. As you pointed out, they are flamboyant rather than understated like British guns. Mechanically they are sound.

My biggest disappointment with Ferlachs in general is the makers know a lot about making guns, but not a lot about dangerous game specifications. You see a lot of over/under, single trigger, rimless, short stocked, poorly dimensioned (DAH and DAC) Ferlachs. You must tread carefully and with much discernment or you’ll own something you’ll want to get rid of but can’t find a buyer at any reasonable price.

Joseph Winkler also anytime....beautiful rifles.....

I, myself have litte experience at dangerous game hunting, I have hunted in British Coumbia, Yukon & Alaska hooved game where grizzly bear were encountered. But never hunted them specifically. So, use of a double rifle is new to me. Furthermore, I have found that I am guilty of not using "enough" gun for moose and elk finding a 7x57 and
30-06 quite capable. If one goes "hunting" rather than "shooting" ranges under 100 paces can be achieved. Sheep goats and caribou often require longer ranges and use of optics. But I am no expert and have usually hunted familiar geography. I did have a Steyr Pro-hunter in 376 when i was working out of Port Heiden. That ugly rifle with a
3-9×42 Redfield was very accurate and fun to shoot, except for cost of cartridges.
But now I live in Kenya and to even get a rifle permit and find ammunition is a bit of a hassle. I can definitely say there are only three cartridges I could make use of, never intending to hunt elephant, rhino, or cats:
30/06, 9.3x62 (or x72R) and 375 H&H.
So I really like Fanzoj's break-action single
(web pic). I would like a Highland Stalker,
(...sigh) but I am sure I can only afford one rifle and that, no doubt should be a 375.
My hunting will be Uganda and Tanzania I reckon.

Name a lousy, low quality Ferlach? I can’t.
Agree.....

All the ones I have seen have been impeccable....

Only negetive I can come up with is they build doubles on any type of cartridge such as 458 wm...

That rim vs. rimless for D/R's is a real crux. Also, the tilting-block lock-up on break-actions leaves a breach over-hang that seems to me woud interfer with reloading quickly. One of Fazolj's singles in 8x68 with 4-12 var. 'scope would be interesting.

A couple of
Fanzoj photos.

Absolutely stunning artisan work! Very "Totonic" example and unique. What cartridge, cal? An art exhibit. How could a value for these guns have a base-line.

A couple of Ferlach double rifles is for sale here, unfortunately both in .458 one in Winchester Magnum and one is a Lott.

Johann Fanzoj: https://www.armeriathesniper.it/categorie/88-fucile-express-jfanzoj-hh-cal458-winchester-magnum.html

Franz Zodia: https://www.armeriathesniper.it/categorie/95-fucile-express-franz-sodia-560-ej-safari-458-lott.html

And a Franz Zodia over-under double rifle in .375 H&H: https://www.armeriathesniper.it/fucili-a-canna-rigata/327-express-fsodia-515hh-cal-375hh.html

Personally I am not so fond of the design of the actions on the side by sides, they seem, with lack for better wording, quite "fat" around the fences. The over-under is also not the most beautiful creation but that is probably due to the double Kersten locks needed to make it strong enough for the caliber. I dont know what the action type on the side by side rifles are called, but it does not look as good as say the ones used by Heym for the 89.

In Ferlach, rifles of high quality have always been produced, but as far as their design is concerned, it is a matter of taste. In German-speaking countries we call that baroque rifles, comparable to the pompous and opulent ornamentation of the baroque architectural style of the 18th Century. As far as cartridges for big game hunting are concerned, only the cartridges 375 H&H Magnum and 458 Winchester Magnum were known in Ferlach a few decades ago. Something of that has remained. The building of rifles for hunting dangerous game was more the domain of the gunmakers from Suhl in Germany.

Interesting.....

Interesting.....
I suppose that most activitues stress the tool used over technuque: Take logging for instance: Sthil vs Husqvarna vs. Jhonsred vs. Homelite, vs. Echo ad finitem...... But the prooer application of a Humbolt undercut applied with experience at gauging the nature of each oarticuluar tree--ind I have not even mentioned saw chai types and variety of sharpening styles. Git 'er done a-fore the time and inclibation depart. Ivreckon Ferlach stops at 9.3 caliber, but a very decent one at that.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
