Hornady Brass quality? What is your favorite brass for safari calibers?

This posting doesn't really cover the big - bore safari stuff, but...

My dad was an accuracy guy, hung up on details. He weighed everything, built a jig to measure neck thickness and wall thickness, and it quickly showed the inconsistencies of poor brass. (we both have training as machinists) Quickly proved - better brass, better accuracy.

The older mainstream Winchester and Remington brass proved to be quite variable - that being said it loaded and worked great - in a hunting scenario

Hands down winner in his testing was Nosler/Norma, with Hornady being a very close second. Surprisingly and not mentioned, maybe because of the limited calibres, was Weatherby brass. Tested out on par with the Norma/Nosler, and seems to have great longevity, considering the abuse it takes from the big magnums

Hornady has been serviceable in all the cartridges I've tried, I can't really fault it from .222 to the various 7mm and 30's up to .375 and .450-400 3". Except I don't think the base is sized correctly in their 9.3x62 brass, believe they took a shortcut there and used brass with an under sized base more appropriate for 30-06.
from a post on another forum:

"I discovered there were two problems. First of all, Hornady saves a buck by making 9.3x62 brass from '06 blanks. .....
Secondly, the RCBS dies I was using at the time size 9.3 brass down to the dimensions of the '06 case. Come to find out this is because RCBS used to make forming dies to create 9.3x62 brass from .30-06 cases. Fifty or sixty years ago this worked great because it allowed a guy to make cases for the old Mauser Uncle Bill brought home from the war. Today however, it's a liability because the growing popularity of the old 9.3 is predicated on loading the round up to modern pressures.
So I've concluded that if you're content with using the 9.3x62 at its old school pressures, Hornady brass or RCBS dies are probably okay. However, if you are looking for the performance we've all come to expect avoid Hornady brass and RCBS sizing dies."

I prefer Lapua if I can get it, or tied for second place RWS or Norma. The big USA brands have had so many problems with cost cutting and QC issues that I don't rely on Rem, Win, or Fed brass to be consistent. Once sorted, bad ones culled and the rest prepped, those three can be used to make excellent ammo.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
