For you Ruger No 1 owners

Whiskey1, you sound as besotted with # 1s as I am.... Go for it, and enjoy. I'm STILL trying to et an "official" response on whether Ruger will release 2017 calibers.... the 2016 versions are still available down under, but prices are climbing.
Enjoy the process of getting your new baby.

I suppose I am. I expect this thread and the damage inflicted on a fine rifle by careless shippers will probably result in my first custom No. 1.

My commiserations, mate. I can imagine how sick that made you feel. Are Fedex coming to the party on costs to repair/replace the damage? Can you sue the b@#^@$#s? I hope so...

The rifle was insured with FedEx by the man I purchased it from. He will be filing a claim tomorrow. We shall see if they and I can agree on a figure...I saw my gunsmith yesterday. He said cost to duplicate the stock in the 1974 factory style with the same quality of walnut would cost around $1200 which is more than I paid for the rifle.

"Pain & Suffering" have to be worth something too!

I can believe that; similar costing down under; I almost dread what the 9.3X64 will cost me, seeing it's coming from a "Master Gunsmith" Have I mentioned his name/ business operation? Look it up if you feel like doing so: scgunsmith.com.au. Let me know what you think....

That's about worth crying over... sorry you have to deal with that.

Nice website..........thanks..........................hope to do business with him in future..............Wayne..................initially No. 3 was a poor man's No 1 with cheaper wood, etc. But their scarcity has driven their price to higher than a used No 1.......................FWB

thanks for sharing, i've been looking for a number 1 in 45-70 or 35 whelen, we can use them for primitive weapon season here.

OpticsSp...................You must use the open sights I presume? Otherwise a No 1 in the Whelen is a pretty darn effective "primitive weapon".....I have two No 1's in 45-70............both now scoped as my eyes aged, and they are surprisingly effective even to 200 yds with the correct load....................FWB

no, i think it just has to be a pre 1900 design from the way the law reads now. it gets more relaxed every year as they want more people hunting. since the number one is based on the Farquharson it's ok. optics are ok too. I like the whelen, but it's a tough one to find. right now i'm using an H&R buffalo classic when i can hunt, but the number one has interested me since I read Selous used a rifle of that style. the buffalo classic is also a pig to carry and I do not enjoy shooting it.

you don't wanna move one of those rugers do ya :),

Me? no, very sorry, I think I have just about everything covered with the five I'll end up keeping. (17FB, 25.06, 300WSM, 9.3X64, and 416Rgby.) The last two are "coming", one being built, the big'un being imported. As said earlier, I'm no fan of belted cases. Now, a 45/70, 450NE, or a 450.400....
Stop it! the disease is infecting me again... better have a drink and go lie down.....

Geoff, I have a Ruger No.1 in 450 NE was a 45/70 originally . It has a recoil reducer and a limbsaver recoil pad fitted. To say it is " lively " with full loads , would be the understatement of the year! Definitely need to add some weight to it . Comfortable to shoot with black powder and cast bullets:)

Brett, stop it, please.... the 416 Rigby (I had one before and sold it: stupid me) wasn't too bad, standing up with lighter projectiles (old Barnes 300s, @ 2900fps), but the 450 Woodleighs were a different matter. I'm prejudiced in thinking the #1 is one of the most elegant modern rifles made.... the 450s made 2200+ if I was silly...

But you only need to shoot it once, right?

Once is enough, twice is more than enough and three times is sheer stupidity;). All jokes aside, they ( Ruger No.1s) are a great rifle

Wow, that stock damage is enough to make you sick.

Hope you get a fair recovery.

Three days into the claim process and nothing from FedEx. Either way the rifle will no longer be factory original or pretty so it will get rechambered. Debating with myself between the Lott, .450 NE 3 1/4, and .45-120 Smokeless. Then off to Renner....

Ok - you didn't ask my opinion. And I ain't paying...so I'm just yaking....

But if you are sending off to Renner...you gotta (gotta!) go with the .450 NE 3.25!

Just saying.

;)

.45-120 and .450 NE are both 3 1/4" cases. I'm trying to discover what dimensions if any are different. I'd prefer to have .450 Nitro Exp. on the roll mark but if it is easier- read less hassle and expense- to chamber for the 120 and get exactly the performance I want- 500 grain Barnes XFB at 2250- then I'll live with it. I know the NE rechamber cleans up the .458 chamber fine but the extractor needs adjusted. I'm researching that issue ref. the 120...Oh, and I can get loan of a 120 chamber reamer for the asking. Thoughts or advice?

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
