I’ve never bought a “drop in stock” who do I look to for a stock similar in shape to a BDL or WBY with built in chassis and DM for a Rem 700 short action? Needs to be a short lop for my wife. 12 3/8-12 1/2.

Any advice?

Lots of options for a Rem 700... Are you only interested in wood/walnut? or is synthetic an option? laminate?

Also.. what sort of budget are you thinking?

Replacing a Rem 700 stock could literally be anything from a $100 to a $3000 affair depending on what you're wanting to do..

That’s going to be a tall order for a drop in. A youth model will get you the LOP your after, but most likely will be for a hinged floor plate. Bell and Carlson makes a 700 BDL WBY style but again, hinged floor plate and also outside your LOP. Best of luck

I got Houge stock for my old BDL but converted it to a ADL with the floor plate, hated having to cycle every round through the chamber to unload. I don’t know if they offer what you need in LOP.

i missed the LOP issue... I agree with @Jeff 907 .. that's going to be a challenge for "drop in".. unless you go with a custom maker (the very expensive option)..

that said.. having a competent gunsmith shorten the LOP on most stocks really isn't too big of a deal.. Ive had to do this several times on a variety of shotguns and rifles for my wife (I'm 6'4... not much of anything I shoot is going to fit any woman well.. much less a short one..)..

There is an extra cost involved though.. your typically not only looking at the labor cost for cutting down the stock.. but also potentially looking at buying a new grind to fit recoil pad and the labor involved in shaping/fitting it to the stock..

this isn't always the case.. but Ive had to deal with that more than once.. I'd plan on it and have it accounted for in your budget..

Try Boyd’s custom length on stock available at extras cost…very nice laminated stocks

HS Precision, but what's said above re: cut/fit new pad (Decelerator!) is cheapest and Rem 700 stocks aren't worth anything (you can find one taken off another rifle, if desired!) I have a brand new 700 SA black w/ gray rubber grips sitting in a closet BUT it's for the heavy bbl varmint rifle. IF you have the stock cut, you should also have the action bedded at the same time. The HS has a full length bedding block and pillars, so the gun will shoot better after the drop-in. I'd also throw a Timney (or other) aftermarket trigger in at the same time (simple!) The above mods will increase the accuracy of the gun for you wife! For about the same price as the HS, you could have the stock cut, bedded, new trigger.

I should have put that. I would like something light. Probably some kind of “plastic “. As for $ I want something good. Thinking in the $3-500 range.

I generally have a local smith do my work. But he is backed up a bit and I think we are going to make a trip to Africa in August September. So thought a drop in might be a quick fix. But doesn’t sound like that may work. If I can find the right stock I can do the cutting and pad myself.

HS precision makes excellent stocks. I have one on a 700 in 30-06. Dropped in beautifully. I also added the magpul mag well to take AICS mags.

The aluminum bedding and the fact that the barrel is free floated now have tightend groups up as well. Strongly recommend them.

Cheers

If youre looking for light, a boyds laminate is off the table.. but there are plenty of synthetic options that would probably serve you well in that price range..

McMillian would be my first choice.. but they are going to exceed your budget.. they do have a Hunter stock for a Rem 700 in inventory right now though and ready to ship..

Bell and Carlson makes an excellent synthetic for the Rem 700... Ive got one of their stocks on my Rem 600 and love it.. B&C are within your budget.. and they likely have something they can ship right now..

HS Precision also makes an excellent product.. They are on the higher end of your budget.. but are also IMO in between B&C and McMillian in terms of quality.. I'd consider B&C to be a chevy.. the HS to be a nice German import.. and the McMillian to be an entry level supercar of the synthetic stock world :)

FWIW I have owned rifles sporting all three of these manufacturers stocks... and I'd gladly buy products from any of these companies again.. you really cant go wrong with any of them..

I just did a 700 build. Used an HS Precision stock, Timney trigger, and order the HS Precision floor metal to replace the BDL floor metal. It’s in a 375 H&H and weighs 6 pounds 12 ounces without the scope.

Best answer is to order an inletted McMillan M40 stock, pillars installed, painted whatever you wish, sling swivel front and rear, 1 in decelerator pad, LOP at your length.

true drop in…perfect…to your specs.

Phillip I was reviewing some of the auctions online and saw your Nubian Ibex hunt coming up this weekend. It also showed you have Addax and Axis deer. Is there a website I can go to and see the lodge, cost of animals and what is available? Thanks Mark

I really like that knife you're selling. It looks so similar to my original 1306 that has been around a long time. I can't spend that much but if you get to a point where you'd entertain offers let me know. Thx, James
