Double Rifle Competitions

Our monthly competition is really a big bore competition (375 minimum), and a few of us use our doubles. Surprisingly the doubles do pretty well against the bolt guns, even the scoped ones.
The format is 6 shots, the bolt guys can start with three up, usually one chambered and the bolt open and then they reload lalf way. The double guys start loaded, but on safe and of course reload twice more.
The course varies, but usually static jungle lane targets that the shooter moves to. Range varies from about 20 metres to 50 metres. The scoring circles are a 10, 8 and 6 ring.
Time is taken, but is only used to indicate time out or to sort out a tie. We used to divide score by time, but it resulted in rushing with poorer accuracy.

Sounds fun and like good practice.

It is that way to level the playing field I think. It is not just bolt antions and doubles, but Ruger No1's too. My friend has won it once with his No1 and come second also, quite an achievement.

Our Big Game Rifle Clubs have 2 events specifically for doubles, Stopping Doubles and Stalking Doubles.

Stopping (min calibre .400”, min bullet weight 400gn, min muzzle energy 3900 ft. lb)
@50 metres - 2 shots in up to 5 minutes
@50 metres 4 shots in 16 seconds
@25 metres 4 shots in 16 seconds
all standing unsupported

Stalking (minimum calibre .228”)
@100 metres - 2 shots sitting or kneeling in up to 5 minutes then 2 shots standing unsupported in up to 5 minutes
50 and 25m all standing unsupported
@50 metres - 2 shots up to 5 minutes, then 4 shots in 16 seconds
@ 25 metres - 4 shots in 16 seconds

There are also Dangerous Game (timed and with 'power factor' factored in to score) and other events where doubles are often used and do well.

Competitions, especially ones such as these, encourage the exact practice that makes better hunters. Good marksmanship, through good established muscle memory, through good habits, made through good practice.

Great time and ways to avoid some of the poor habits one can get at normal range firing line.
