What is the difference in Kudu’s? I’ve read about the Greater Kudu and the East Cape Kudu. What is the difference is size, looks, and range? If anyone could share picture I’d like to compare the two animals. Thank you so much for any help.

I'll skip the sub species debate. (Tragelaphus strepsiceros)

Southern Greater Kudu tend to be larger. Larger horns in the biggest specimens.

EC Kudu are often darker color.

Pictures abound on AH of both. Just scroll on through.

While I had never looked at the specific scoring differences, as posted by Brickburn above, I was told years ago that a Silver Medal GS Kudu equals a Gold Medal EC Kudu......that looks to be about right. I've never shot an EC Kudu, but I would not hesitate to look for a trophy there.....I have seen some heavy old monsters that friends have taken. And especially after the rabies and drought have hammered Namibian kudu, EC seems like a pretty viable option. Good question......................FWB

EC will be smaller, my biggest was 43 inches. Body size is smaller as well. They are an excellent hunt, but you just need to adjust your trophy expectations.

I have attached my biggest EC and SG Kudu for comparison. 43” Vs 52” IIRC

Eastern Cape (EC) Kudu are smaller with darker coats. A big EC Kudu has 45-50 inch horns. A big Southern Greater (SG) Kudu has 50-55 inch horns.

Thanks! Very helpful. I also feel like an idiot. I completely mis measured my Eastern Cape kudu thinking he was much larger than he was. A few months ago a friend and I remeasured the correct way just for fun and found he scored 106 which makes him just what I always thought, a good respective animal of his species which is exactly what I wanted on a great hunt but not a trophy except to me!!!

Just moving to DM. Yes, please ask your friend if he knows somebody who might be willing to support a persistent hunt in the snow.

I saw your post regarding a hunt in Africa. I am sure you have been bombarded with messages and replies from other outfitters, so I will keep this one quick.
