These days many (both low and high life) don't care about the meat.

Too much work and many don't even know how to do it.

But they will take a head or horns to be mounted to impress their idiot buddies.

Meat is more valued when the economy crashes and people are hurting for money.

That could happen soon the way things look now.

You definitely don’t understand the southern deer hunter, sure there is some wanton waste and if caught the penalties are fairly harsh but I would say 99%+ of deer hunters consume the meat and donate what they can’t use.
Making such an inflammatory and blanket statement of hunters is disrespectful of the millions of good ethical hunters in the world not to mention on this forum.

I just found out the elk I killed tested positive for chronic wasting disease. Unfortunately my cooler stopped working and I had to take it to town and have it processed immediately and was unable to wait for the test to come back before processing it. As far as I can tell there has never been a case of it transmitting to humans, but the CDC says not to eat it. I got $864 in the processing and I really hate to throw it away. What do you guys think? Eat or throw.

DONT EVEN THINK about it!!!!! What is $864 compared to your life? There is no cure for this. I would even go so far to get rid of the freezer or completely defrost, both bleach then viniger before I used again

I should have mentioned that the usage of meat depends a lot on geography.

Areas like Appalachia or other poor and hungry locales are naturally going to have little meat wasted.

I’m neither poor nor hungry, I prefer game meats, game birds, fish and shellfish that I harvest myself. With today’s commercial farming it’s much healthier and to my eye safer.
I’ve seen waste and full utilization of game in all of the states and countries I’ve hunted and geography and culture definitely play a roll in both.

I think age is a big part of it.

Younger folk are on their phones and if they need meat they call to have a pizza delivered.

Much easier and less messy.

Frosty and I got it figured out, that's what Bobby Jr was doing with that dead bear in college. Spreading prions from ursidae to cervidae! Methalene Blue, that stuff is loaded with prions!

I should add to my earlier post that I live in Pike county Illinois, a large whitetail hunting destination. I’d say most of the discarded deer are from those who have to travel a long ways. There are donation drop off sites that will process unwanted deer and give them to food pantries. This has really cut back on the ditch finds.
I don’t think a ban on eating venison would slow down the deer hunting much let alone CWD.
For the record I haven’t eaten venison in over 5 years even though I have killed at least one deer every fall. I have older friends who can’t hunt like they used too that enjoy the meat.
We raise beef cattle and I just won’t walk past a beef T bone to eat a deer.
