Curious about your 404 build. How long is the barrel? What kind of safety? Doesn't appear to be Model 70 style and original is obviously removed. Who did the bolt handle modification? Very nice looking war horse.

Just a few of my favorite things:

.416 Ruger African
.416 Rigby Sako 85 Brown Bear
9.3x62 Sako Black Bear
.358 Norma custom Mauser
9.3x64mm Custom rifle

My trusty John Rigby BGR in 416, Ryan Breeding 505 Gibbs, then my loved Heym 89b Grossbox in 450NE, and also a 89b in 450/400, 88b in 375 Flanged Mag, and Westley Richards 450/400. And my near-dream 500NE, another 89b with case colors and extended top tang should be exporting from Germany this month (likely just late to accompany on my April Zimbabwe trip) with its companion, an 89b in 470, both on Grossbox frames. The 470 will likely move along to another loving home, I just couldn’t leave it behind, seemed importing one, might as well do two.

Amazing collection!

I've only done two African DG hunts, both one shot kills with rifles that I custom stocked. A Zimbabwe Cape Buffalo with my Remington 700 in .375 RUM with a Leupold 2-7x scope and a Barnes 300 gr TSX handload...
FysDHSgl.jpg

and a Mozambique Leopard with my Weatherby Vanguard in .300 Wby wearing a Leupold VX 3 4.5-14x40 scope and shooting a Barnes 168 gr TTSX handload...

Barrel is 25”. It’s the original safety. Kinda hard to see in that photo. Kept it for nostalgia sake, as I grew up shooting a sporterized Eddystone in 30-06. Dennis Olson built the rifle.

this is something I struggled with for a few years.. I couldnt decide what I actually wanted, vs what was really necessary vs what was most practical, etc.. etc.. and I went through a number of rifles for a little while..

I started with a Win 70 375 H&H Stainless Classic.. then ramped up to a 416 Taylor.. bought a 416 Rem Mag and turned around and sold it shortly thereafter.. Went nuts and bought a 585 Hubbel Express project rifle at one point then realized I didnt have the time or the patience to follow through with that project and sold it, etc..etc..

Ive contemplated doubles more times than I can count.. got within seconds of buying an R8 with a 375 barrel at least a dozen times.. etc..etc..

I finally rescinded myself to realizing I really only need 1 DG rifle.. DG hunting isnt something I do a whole lot of.. and Im more of a buffalo guy than anything else.. so stepping into the big bores, while it might be fun, isnt really practical (elephants, rhinos, etc arent on my wish list).. and Im a "client", not a PH..

So Ive come full circle.. sold everything off except the Win 70 375 H&H that I originally bought.. and just spent a little money upgrading it with a B&C stock, pillar and glass bedding the action, getting a trigger job done on it, etc..

My guess is that will be the only DG rifle in my safe from today until the time the good Lord calls me home.. Im super happy with it and it accomplishes everything I need it to do..

That is unless @roverandbrew and my wife talk me into a chapuis iphisi in 450-400.. theyve both been working on me for a while.. and the wife owns a iphisi in 375 that Ive been super impressed with... I know I dont need it... and I know I would rarely, if ever, hunt with it... but... those two are horrible enablers lol..

You wouldn’t even have to reserve your Chapuis Iphisi 450-400 for just Cape buffalo either, it would be fun to hunt plains game too and wild pigs at home. That Chapuis Iphisi 375 was a wonderful, thoughtful gift for your wife, don’t you deserve one too?

.

Yes or no ? Oh what the hell .....

1/ Krieghoff .470 NE open sights
2/ another Krieghoff .470 NE open sights
3/ Beesley 450/400 3 1/4 inch open sights
4/ CZ 550 Magnun .416 Rigby Zeiss Conquest scope
5/ Krieghoff .375 H&H double Zeiss glass
6/ CZ 550 in .375 H&H with Leupold glass
7/ 9,3x74 Belgium double open sights

Am seriously looking at the Rigby .404 Jeffrey & will likely make it number 8 in the not too distant future!

.
Would love to know the difference in your 2 Krieghoff .470's. It's the double I originally wanted but it was out of my budget and so I went with a great deal on a Merkel 450/400

Only two at the moment….a (cough, choke, gasp, push feed) Weatherby Mark V 375 H&H and a Dakota 404J. I figure those two will pretty much handle anything on the DG bolt gun side of the equation. Now if I can just continue to resist the double temptation!

That Dakota is a beauty.

Wow, I am envious of many of the DG batteries of my fellow AH'ers. Many very nice rifles.

My current and likely final DG battery is as follows:

1. 500NE Rigby Shikari double with Trijicon RMR 1 MOA . Should take possession in the next month or so......cant wait!
2. 450/400 Heym 88B double with Trijicon SRO 1 MOA. It has seen quite a bit of action in Africa on both plains game and DG.
3. 470NE Rizzini double with Trijicon RMR 1 MOA, most accurate double I own but may sell it after I get the Rigby. Used in on my elephant and rhino hunts.
4. 375 RUM Remington custom shop 700 ABG with Swarovski Z8i+ 1-8x24 with 4A-IF reticle. I have re-barreled with a Lilja barrel and restocked with a H-S Precision stock and it shoots 1/2 MOA. I have had this rifle for 25 years and it was the rifle I took on my first African safari back in early 2000's

I did. Lasted about 3 weeks. After I did some work to it another AH member needed a Buff gun for upcoming trip so sold it to him.

I had the pleasure of shooting Mark's Winchester M70 in 416 Rem as a friend of mine was the fortunate one that bought the rifle. Shoots like a dream, 3/4 MOA or better, and the kick was very manageable with the mercury recoil reducer that Mark put in it.

Come on Dave....you know deep down you want a double, Bobby has one now, so you need to step up and join the club!!

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob

Good morning. I see that you had a Sauer 202 for sale for $3,000. Did you sell it at that price?
I have one for sale as well. I listed it (on here ) at $3,000 as well. Is the price high, low or right where it should be?

Thanks. Alex. [redacted] in case you want to call me to discuss further. I appreciate your time help and support.
