Hi everyone

Folks on here often ask for help with issues they may have or problems to which they need suggestions to resolve. Often (and I fall into the category) we are left wondering what outcome the OP ended up with and what route they took.

Well, I'm going to close the circle on the question I asked - to which I got some really good suggestions. My problem was eyes failing with age but wishing to continue to use open sights on my double and what novel options there might be that didn't require using either a red dot or a scope.

The rifle is a Chapuis .375H&H double and it had a traditional shallow V rear sight and tiny bead foresight. I have a Fabarm Asper double in 9.3x74R with a whizzy fibre optic foresight and rear sight beads which are great but changing the rear sight on the Chapuis was seemingly a pathway to a whole load of grief.

So here is the solution I opted for. The foresight was replaced with a Rechnagel fibre optic front blade and the rear sight had a gold vertical inlay added. Two relatively simple adjustments but what a difference they have made - I just hadn't considered the gold inlay on the rear sight so thanks to AH members for that one.

In another little twist, the gunsmith (who was originally an action maker for Holland and Holland but, who, during his apprenticeship had to do everything and was the only chap willing and able to work on a double) reset the front sight and, to check placement, just used some cheap 300grn PPU ammo. Oh my, at 50 yards these grouped at under an inch and perfectly to the point of aim. The rifle was regulated for Norma African PH 350grn and the regulation target is closer to 2" so I now have two seemingly regulated rounds!

Here are a couple of pictures of the solution. Once again, many thanks to those that offered such good counsel.

That is awesome @Fabnosh . I have a hard time with open sights myself. I am glad it made the rifle more useable for you! I put a reflex on mine, but I might look into the front sight set up like you have as well.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
