Yep. My lottery number was six. I enlisted and chose my MOS rather than be drafted.

My wife’s grandfathers brother was a Polar Bear in WW1. The army assumed guys from the upper Midwest could take the cold.
Many of the regiment complained that Michigan was no where near as cold as Russian winters.
