Cape Buffalo in SA or Tanzania? The better hunt

Is this a serious question? I do not mean to be rude but Tanzania is THE top hunting destination in Africa for many reasons. It is also the most expensive. The benefit for buffalo hunters here is that adding a second buffalo costs virtually nothing.

Do you find they’re more wary of hunters because of this? Does it make the hunt more challenging? Or are they more aggressive?

Just interested as I would have thought they were in a large area, self sustaining in SA, they would still be the same animal - but possibly not. If they’re animals that are worked with or see people frequently though I appreciate there may be a difference.

Interesting concept anyway. Looks like it would be Zim for me if the doors ever open for a 40th or 50th. Quite a price difference between that and Tanzania .
I have hunted 2 million acres non fenced in Zim and 100,000 acres fenced in SA with a sustainable herd…I saw and experienced absolutely no difference in buff behavior. If they saw, heard or smelled you in both they were gone. lions or not

Agree with Philip…the cost in Tanzania is all about the day rates…first buff not bad trophy fee…second just awesome

Between black and white, there are many shades of gray, so between Tanzania and South Africa, I suppose there are intermediates, such as Zimbabwe or Mozambique.
Between the latter two, which is more "affordable"?
I've already hunted a bull in South Africa. I'd like to visit or explore another buffalo oasis, but without the price going through the roof. That's why I was wondering between these two: Zimbabwe or Mozambique.
Thanks in advance.

Look at export and shipping costs. You’ll find Zimbabwe is considerably less expensive to get your trophies home than Mozambique. Also buying licenses for PG in addition to your buffalo can add up in Mozambique.

Mozambique is also a good choice. More expensive than RSA, but generally nowhere near as expensive as Tanzania.

Some hunters are very put off by the high-fenced hunting properties of RSA. But a great many of those properties are enormous, often 20 square miles (at 640 acres/square mile, so 12800 acres) and larger, some of them much larger.

Hunting them is largely the same. You'll ride around in a bakkie until you spot a herd or fresh spoor, then get out and walk-and-stalk.
I was going to say Mozambique because I think you'll get a similar experience to Tanzania for a lot less money, but have you ever been hunting in Africa? I would not recommend Mozambique to a first time hunter

I did my first hunt in Mozambique, why would you not recommend it for a first time hunter? Just curious.

My first trip was also to Mozambique, but I think the travel is a bit arduous for a first time hunter. Don't get me wrong I love Mozambique, and I am dying to go back - I just think it is a little bit much for a first timer.

Tanzania but as previously stated I would recommend Zimbabwe top Buffalo areas for a 1st timer to Africa for Buffalo

I noticed people saying multiple buffalo in Tanzania are affordable. Been looking at some outfitters with prices on their website and unless I’m missing something this is not the case.
First buffalo $3750
2nd $4500
3rd $5500
4th $7500
I’m not looking at Tanzania as of now so I wasn’t going to bother any outfitters. Is it a total of $7500 for 4 buffalo?

No, that is the trophy fee for each, so $21,250 in trophy fees for 4 buffalo.

That’s what I thought, in my simple mind an increase of a thousand dollars on each additional animal is not a bargain.

The trophy fees are each. Show me the outfitter in quality areas in Zimbabwe, Caprivi, or Mozambique that will allow you to prebook a double buffalo hunt without paying double daily rates or extending the hunt to 14 days at an increased daily rate or an $8000+ trophy fee on the second buffalo. Tanzania isn’t cheap, but a double buffalo hunt on a standard 10 day license isn’t a bad value in comparison to other double buffalo hunts.

I agree but some were saying they were practically giving them away, not just here but on some videos and TV shows.
Like I said I was just curious, not looking at Tanzania now but maybe in the future.

I’ve never heard anyone suggest they are being given away, but the daily rates on a 1 buffalo and a 2 buffalo hunt in Tanzania are typically the same. Just the difference in a trophy fee, so it’s a small add on compared to adding a 2nd trophy buffalo in other countries. The third and fourth buffalo hunt categories put you in a very different daily rate bracket.

Philip Glass stated “ the 2nd buffalo is virtually nothing” hell I was just asking a freaking question out of curiosity.
You are correct, what’s an extra 3 or 4 grand on a $100,000 safari and I do understand that even an increase in trophy fee for a second bull is a hell of a lot cheaper than another safari.

This $10000 advertised hunt is Not in the BVC- which is considerably more expensive.

Daily rates on a double buffalo hunt in southern Tanzania are around $25-$30k.

I don't think the country in Africa where you shoot your first buffalo is important. It is all a question of money or the opportunities that presents itself. That is how I shot decades ago my first buffalo in Uganda and the next two buffalo in Tanzania. Thereafter came a buffalo hunt in the Caprivi, all together not the classic approach recommended from some members.

Not sure your price range. Have a 375 H&H with a muzzle brake. Nice rifle only fired a few times. Also a Mossberg 375 Ruger its been used and shows a few hunts on it.
Two African Safaris Hunted South Africa both times,
