On my trip down and back last year my ammo was in a checked bag from SLC to NY on Delta and then to Joberg on SAA. We picked up our luggage and rechecked it to fly to Port Elizabeth on SAA and didn't remove our ammo, it was in our checked bags.
On our way back from Port Elizabeth we had to remove our ammo box from our checked bags to fly on SAA to Joberg. I then picked up my bags and placed the ammo box back into my checked bag in Joberg for the flight to the US on SAA with no problems.
On the surplus ammo can, my hunting partner did that but it was a plastic ammo can with a way to place a lock on it. No problems.
