Getting everything ready to go on first safari, Tholo in Botswana. I plan on taking my Blaser R8 with two barrels. I’m also bringing my fathers rifle for ease of paperwork.

Tholo said Botswana may count my rifle with two barrels as two guns. Anybody have experience with this? They said they were not for sure and that Botswana has some antiquated firearms laws.

I’ve taken firearms through Maun on several occasions and about the only consistency to it has been that it’s different every time. I really believe it depends on who is working when you get there and when you leave. The best suggestion I can give you is to have some cash on hand and a Visa or Mastercard. There is a currency exchange office there in case they demand Pula or Rand.

What are the dates of your trip? I know of at least one other member that will be departing next Friday to hunt the following week.

In any case good luck and I’m sure you’ll have a grand time. Can’t wait to hear the report and see the pics.

We will be hunting Sept this year.

Oh how I love inconsistency. Ugh

Maun is hilarious. You will get through with no issue but as GA Hunter says, we can’t tell you exactly how that will happen! The last time (2018), they counted my bullets and then took an hour to calculate how much tax I had to pay per bullet. It worked out to about $20 total. I was tempted to ask if I would be refunded the tax on the bullets I took back home with me just to watch their heads explode.

You will love Botswana, it’s a special place. Having hunted buff and ele there before the closure, it was bittersweet.

Take the time to do a flightseeing tour of the Okavango. They go right from the Maun airport.

For whatever reason, Botswana is my favorite. As others have said you'll have a great time there. Take the time to study and appreciate those trackers and the history of the San. There is a whole community both at the camp and at the hdqrs.

Roll with the flow at the airport- just as with everything Africa, pays to be patient.

Track eland all day in that sand and report back!!! maybe the best hunting experience in Africa! :)
