Black Rhino 'Gertie' of Kenya

Here's a picture of the famous Black Rhino 'Gertie' of Kenya's Amboseli National Park, that's before her horn dropped off in the 1960s.

Weird how a non-zoo animal can grow such a distended horn without it getting broken or something.

Regrettably her horn did become detached

I wonder where the horn went, is it with the warden's family or possibly the ranger station ??

I just want to confirm that I knew Gertie well as we visited Amoseli on a regular basis during the early 1960's. The tip of her horn did wear off before she lost the mail portion of her horn. It was found and with the aid of film projection the original horn was measured and was 54 1/4 inches long. She later had a fight which left her one eye hnging on her cheek, she also had a slash in her side.

I was there early the morning (and the first to report the incident to the rangers) after the fight with my wife and took a photograph (slide) which I still have. I also wrote a poem at the time discribing the incident and the fact that it was Nick Carter from Kajiado who tranqualized her with a shring fired from a crossbow.
