I was speaking to a PH at a hunting show recently, like most I spoke to he asked what I was going to be using. All the PHs seemed satisfied that I chose a 300g tsx for my load. One stated he preferred a 270g tsx for Cape buffalo over the 300 grain in a 375hh. He went on to explain that he felt the longer bullet and lower velocities with the 300 grain lead to the bullet tumbling and hanging backwards on the off side. I experienced a 180 grain 30cal ttsx doing that same thing on my daughters Kudu. I assumed it was a anomaly since I have never seen or heard about it before at that time.
Well hear I am with a nice sub moa load for my 375 with a 300gr tsx . And i got to thinking,,,,, wonder how a 270gr will shoot? Should be a bit flatter, bit faster,,
TSX or LRX ?
Or should I just be happy with the 300gr ?
I want one load for every thing. I consider my 375 a 300 yard rifle with the scope I have. I am confident I can manage drops for the 300g out to 300 yards for it. My scope is a 1.5-5x and I just don't think I can see well enough to go farther, and 300 may be pushing it for me.

Always good to listen to your PH!

I load the 270gr TSX in 375 and have found it to be very accurate in 3 different rifles. Good speed, and quite deadly on all plains game as well as moose and bear. However, if hunting buffalo, I would go with the heaviest bullet available. The 300 will certainly work for all plains game, as well.

If you have a load that shoots well, you don't have a problem.

I used 270gr TSX for my buff. Went about 5 meters and didn´t even put up a death bellow.
Broke the shoulder and was found under the skin on the opposite side.
The bullet opend upp more than the 300gr bullets I have seen pics of.

I agree with AimSmall. What's interesting in these discussions is we deliberate over what, in this case, amounts to 30 grains of bullet. That's less weight than your standard .22 long rifle round impacting an animal that weighs like 1,800 lbs. I don't think the buffalo will know the difference. One point to consider is the TSX, with a flat base, is more likely to stabilize faster than the boat-tail LRX.

...and no plastic tip break off (jamming the action) on the TSX
