I went to South Africa in May. Hunted Eland, Roan, Sable, Hartebeest, Wildebeest and Nyala. I took a 30-06 and a 375 H&H. I shot all animals with the 375 H&H loaded with 250 grain North Fork softs. My Ph advised me to use the 375 H&H. I shot a warthog for staff meat with the 30-06
I’m certain that the 30-06 would have performed just fine if that’s the only rifle I had taken. But, I hit a couple of animals not exactly where I was aiming. I think the 375 made up for my poor shooting, and I’m not sure the 30-06 would have done the same, or for sure not as well.
I love the .338 on plains game. Took one on a 1 gun Safari in 2017. Did everything I asked it to do shooting 225 grain TSXs. Didn’t totally like the performance of the TSX bullet in that, for me, they didn’t leave much of a blood trail. Thank goodness for excellent trackers.
In contrast, the 375 H&H shooting 250 grain Northforks didn’t require any tracking.
Good luck. It’s hard to make a wrong decision. As always, a good bullet and shot placement is the key.
