A 5,655-carat emerald described as having “remarkable clarity and a perfectly balanced golden green hue” was discovered in Zambia in early October.

The gem was unearthed at the Kagem mine, the world’s largest emerald mine, which is 75% owned by Gemfields Group, a London-based supplier of responsibly sourced colored gemstones, with the remaining stake in the mine owned by the Government of the Republic of Zambia. Gemfields specializes in the mining, processing, marketing and sale of colored gemstones, in particular emeralds and rubies.

I hope my wife doesn't see this or I will forced to go on another hunt to Africa Again.
Last trip she came home with:
1- Monster 868 carats Natural Ruby
2 - 767 Carats Natural Blue Sapphire

Little large for a pinky ring

Thanks for posting that 375. The "Heart of Zambia". They could make a movie about it. Star Leonardo DiCaprio..............an old lady could throw it off of a ship.......call it "Blood Emerald". It is certainly large....almost titanic. Had no idea there was an emerald mine in Zambia.....................FWB

I have been able to handle a number of Zambian emeralds through the years. Bought a piece of rough a couple of years ago. It cut about a 3 1/2 ct stone. Zambian emeralds are know for their rich color. Many of them have better clarity than those sourced from other countries. Usually they are are smaller in size. This piece of rough is extraordinary. As a gemstone cutter I drool over uncut gems like this one. I know they will take it apart for multiple stones, but I always wonder how they decide to do it.... By the way Ethiopia is currently producing some world class emeralds. Usually 15-20% less than similar Columbian......... If you want a good one feel free to contact me.

Are emeralds in general more expensive than diamonds, Bruce?.....Bill

You’d have gotten on well with my dad!
He used to mine emeralds not far from where this one was found. I spent a bit of my childhood holidays out in the bush there on the mines.

Fine quality emeralds over 5 cts can be more than a fine quality diamond of similar size. I once sat during a buying show with an emerald dealer as he showed a jeweler a matched pair of 10 ct emeralds (Columbian). If I remember right the wholesale was something like$250,000. They were nice emeralds, but not 100% eyeclean.

I would of loved to of seen how they mined the emeralds. I spent some time when I was younger on vacation panning gold. Digging quartz crystals. Screening sapphires and garnets. Lot of hours spent doing that in the past....

From what I remember, there was a lot of excavation and following the vein.
Quite a few indicators such as quartz and mica. Honestly I can’t recall all the details. Will ask my dad when I have a chance and see if I can elaborate a bit more.

Guess I should have requested a excavation day from my outfitter this past July when I was there!! Lol

This is an example of a very fine Ethiopian emerald. Good rich color. Very clean, especially for an emerald. This one was picked by my wife and was going into a piece of jewelry for her. She later decided she wouldn’t wear the green..... So I have it for sale in our retail jewelry store. 1.20 ct. Retail is $7990. If someone from AH wanted it I could do it for $6990.

Just moving to DM. Yes, please ask your friend if he knows somebody who might be willing to support a persistent hunt in the snow.
