I got to thinking about reloading the 8x57 JR for use in an old German drilling in that caliber. I have not seen but a very few reloading die sets which are marked for this caliber. But I know that the 8x57 JRS differs from the JR only in the bullet/bore diameter (.318" for the JR vs .323" for the JS). And it seems that dimensions of the 8x57 JS (8x57 Mauser) are very similar to those of the 8x57 JRS, excepting that the latter is a rimmed cartridge case.

So I'm wondering -- could I take a set of reloading dies for the 8x57 JS, substitute a reduced-size expander (.318"), and use an appropriate shell holder for the rimmed case? Not sure whether the 8x57 JS seating die would provide sufficient neck tension for the smaller bullet size. What other considerations am I missing here?

Thanks for any insights.

You are right.
Most reloaders this side of the pond do it this way.

I use 8x57 dies without an expander ball using a shell holder for 303 or 30/40 to reload the 8x57JR. To decap I use a 30 caliber decapping pin from another die.

Sounds like a plan. I'll start looking around for some 8x57 JS dies. RCBS makes expanders sized .315" and .320" so I'll look into those as well. Already have a shell holder that will work.

Hey Guys,
If anyone is in need of ammo/brass I have 2 boxes of Norma 8x57 JR 196 gr SPRN I will be happy to part with.

40-42 gr of 4895 have worked wonders for me with 200 gr bullets

#26 is the right size, but #4 also works great!!!

When I reloaded that calibre I used Hornadys 8x57 Mauser die with the shellholder for 8x57JRS.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
