I know this will sound like madness but if I wanted to turn my x64 to x57 would it be as simple as shortening the camber by 7mm?
Not sure if this matters but the rifle has a half round half octagonal barrel with a rib would that cause any problems?

The simple answer is yes and no.
You haven’t said what the rifle is, which can make a difference to the answer, but basically
The barrel needs to be shortened by however long it needs to re-clock into the correct position to make everything align correctly, then a chamber reamer run in to re cut the chamber. The stock to barrel fitment may then look silly as the barrel has been moved back and unsightly gaps may be present. Then the feeding needs to be addressed to make it feed correctly , may pay to check this first, with dummy rounds.
That’s a start to what needs to be done

Thanks Grumpy, sure sounds like the juice would not be worth the squeeze.
I appreciate you taking your time to explain what would be involved.

Grumpy is right about the barrel channel getting a little gappy unless the octagon section has no taper, which it probably does.
Why would you want to do ditch the X64?
It is probably the best 7mm cartridge ever developed.
I just like the x57 a lot but I realize that there isn't very much of a difference between the two in the real world.

You might be able to rebore it to 9,3x62 if you have enough steel.

I would have asked how to change a 7x57 into the superior 7x64! I shoot both, like both, but feel the 7x64 is a better cartridge in every way. It is not worth going the other way for many practical reasons.

You would be much better served to take the same money you would have to spend on gunsmithing for this, and instead use it towards buying an existing 7x57 sporter. Then you would have two world class calibers, without the (almost assured) headaches. And who doesn't like buying a new gun(?). :)

The thing is….ive already got three x57’s
I may have a problem….

This! I shoot both as well. 64 is the better round in my opinion as well.

As others have mentioned the technical details in setting back the barrel. The only way it would look right is to do a completely new stock etc

So just shoot as a x64 or download to x57 level or sell it and build the rifle you want.

If it was mine I would just shoot it or sell it if I just didn't want the logistics of a different round from the x57.

Just one question. WHY do you want to ruin a perfectly good rifle unless the throat has eroded.
Best way to go is a rebarrel of the same profile. Problem is that profile is expensive.
