550 Magnum - WTB Brass/Projectiles

Quite gentlemanly Krish, I’m tapped out on it and going to make one separately from a CZ 550 action, but really appreciate the offer.

Now you need to buy it!

.. Please! .. share some light on this cartridge!!!

Not buying, but want to see this thing....

Here’s a post from one of our members @JD Noblin on his rifle, an incredible build. Essentially a straightwalled 460 WBY that shoots a 700 grain .550 monster projectile

Another great account from PH Jason van Aarde at

I had intended to do a 505 Gibbs conversion, but through a lot of research and thought, and guidance from minds much more experienced than me, the 550 Mag looked be a much more straightforward process to still achieve 5-bore status from the venerable CZ 550.

I emailed the seller. @krish , etc.

"Does anyone know if this was done by 'Tripple River"? .. And Barrel length?

Thank you, Dan.

For what it is worth, I have one from AHR that is awesome. However, I likely wont use it as I have a superior .450 Rigby I have fallen in lust with. .550 with a lifetime of loaded ammo and components. Not for sale, but can be purchased.:-)

It is stunning! .. if we can see it, once more?

I find it interesting how some wildcat a cartridge to greater than .500 Jeffery ( I really liked the cartridge, it didn’t like me) recoil was a bit much for me to be consistently accurate after 3 rounds.
Is the development of +.500 bore rifles from unfortunate experiences in the jess on elephant, or just because a better idea?
I never discount a better idea.

I'm intrigued.

What an investment CZ's turned out to be.

I have built two 550 Magnums for clients using Granite Mountain Arms African Magnum actions and am now building a third one for myself. The only company that was making 550 Magnum head-stamped brass was RCC but it is unfortunately out of business now. Every now and then you will see head-stamped brass from Jamison. Quality Cartridge Company claims it makes 550 Magnum brass but the website always says "Next run when sufficient back-order exists". I have personally given up on Quality Cartridge Company for supplying anything custom as I've had an order in for 6.5x68 brass now for well over 5 years.

For projectiles, Hawk Bullets makes softs...but I am personally concerned about their bullets not holding together on dangerous game like cape buffalo, hippo, etc. I currently have some Hawk bullets but will only use them for practice and the occasional rabid squirrel charge. Cutting Edge Bullets makes a flat-nose soft and solid....but those projectiles will not feed 100% reliably in the GMA African Magnum action (this is where the CZ550 action has the advantage over the GMA due to different feed ramp geometry and positioning of the feed rails).

In my experience, the only projectiles that will feed with 100% reliability in the GMA action are spire points and round nose projectiles. For solids, I just purchased 1500 700gr round nose solids from Barnes Bullets who made them for me on a custom order. For softs, I am currently talking with Northern Precision Custom Bullets about making some 700gr round nose bonded projectiles with thick jackets.

The Bames projectiles are slated to be delivered to me October 10th. I will only be keeping about 500 of them. Anyone who wants to buy some can PM me.
