Who has experience with the 450 TSX in a 458 Lott? I was looking at load data with H4895 in the 2200 fps range.

Thanks Toby. I know I can push them faster but that 2200 range (give or take a bit) is a great speed without a lot of pressure or recoil. Have you used the 450 TSX on game? I haven't yet but I have hundreds of them on hand and would like to use them in the field.

I'm going to have JJ build some rings/bases on a Champlin 458 Lott he built in the 70's. Plan is to put the Z8i 1-8x scope on it and take it back to Africa for buff, eland, etc.

Yes, I agree. 2200 fps is ideal IMO. Recoil is very manageable in my R8. Total weight with a sling and loaded magazine is 9lbs. So easy to carry in field and light on the shoulder as well.
I haven't used the 458 TSX on game yet, but have used them in 375 with excellent results.

Your R8 is lighter than my Champlin with the octagonal barrel. It's 9 lbs empty with no sling and iron sights (no bases/rings).

Yes. The R8 Professional is pretty light with no kickstop in the stock. If I add a scope, it brings it to 10lbs. I also have a Winchester 70 458WM that weighs more, but for some reason the Winchester has more felt recoil than the R8. Probably comes down to stock fit. What action did JJ build your rifle on?

It's one of the full custom, 60 degree bolt throw Champlin actions that were octagonal to match the octagonal barrel. I have a matching one in 375 H&H. They have 3 ribs inside the action that create the smoothest bolts I have ever handled. Zero wiggle or slop.

Thanks. All of that data was from your Ruger #1? Any results on game?

Thanks. I think the tropical #1 barrels are all 24"? My Champlin is also 24".

Sounds like several of us are making plans for this 450 TSX.

I'm shooting the 450 gr TSX about the same speed as Toby in a 458 Win Mag. I like it. It has worked great on Buffalo on down... Kudu, Waterbuck, Wildebeest, Bushbuck, Impala, Warthog, etc and even a little Grysbok. Pretty forgiving whatever the angle on the small stuff. Reassuring if only have a small window. Run stem to stern or fly right through the small stuff w/o much damage. The more resistance the more damage it seems. Took out the heart and penetrated well on a very nice buff we came across looking for smaller stuff. Has been opening as advertised.

You using the 72grains aa2230 recipe?

Interesting that you mentioned grysbok. I was wondering if they pencil through on tiny 10 or cut them in half? That’s a factor to keep in mind for some of my hunts.

I loaded up some with 75.0 H4895 tonight. It’s a compressed load that should be around 2250-2300.

Are you guys putting optics on your 458’s or using iron sights?

I have a 1.5-5x Leupold with a heavy duplex reticle. I also replaced the factory front bead with a large white bead. I also have a NECG removable peep sight for back up.

Pencil through - not enough resistance to open up. Kind of a laugh but works great.

For the 458, primarily a Leupold 2.5-8 in QDs, w/ 1-4 at camp for backup... if things are tight or its necessary, I go to a 470 double w open sights.

Hi PaulB,
I have a Ballard Arms Model 1885 chambered for .333 Jeffery Flanged. Do you have any idea where I can get ammo for this?

I am new to this forum so I am sorry if I am doing something wrong!
Thank You!
