450gr loads for 404 Jeffery

Old thread revival that some may find interesting.

I’ve had some of these 450gr Norma PH softs in the cupboard and never used them as I use the more traditional 400gr SAF handload.

Shot a large Eland cow this weekend (dressed out at 191kg) and the shot was taken at about 120m. Lung shot and straight through her, with a large entry and 2” diameter exit hole. Hit ribs flush but no leg or shoulder impact. Stacks of blood trail and she ran 30m and expired. Impressive to see the 450grainer in action. Based on limited experience of one animal today, I would definitely use it again.

While not your target 450gr, North Fork 430gr at 2345fps will get your attention. With the relief grooves in the solid shank, North Fork bullets keep pressures down compared to traditional bullets of equal weight. These are an "improved" TB Bear Claw on my opinion. Extremely high weight retention. I've run some aggressive expansion test and NF SS are as close to perfect as I've tested. (Attached is a 450gr 0.458 that came in at 435.3gr going through a dry catalog, 2" diameter oak branch, and 3 water jugs, another dry catalog and captured on the 1st water just after)

Yes I saw that thanks, max velocity 2160fps, I was wondering if it's possible to take it up higher or is that the max pressure allowed?
There is so little difference in ballistic arc and energy at 2300 vs 2160, the juice just ain't worth the squeeze.

On a 100 yard zero, there's less than an inch difference in ballistic arc until you reach 200 yards, and then only just an inch.

at 2300 fps: ~5300 ft lbs at the muzzle and 4300 at 100 yards

vs

at 2160: ~4700 and 3800 at the same distances.

I've found similar for all cartridges I do LD for. An extra 150 fps just doesn't practically improve any of the metrics.

Bigger and heavier is something I want for my bullets but not for my body. *mumble mumble sectional density!*
Right. 450 gr @ +2300 fps mv = retina detachments. Been there. When you're lying awake on the table and surgeon pulls your eyeball out of socket to buckle a silicone belt around it, climbing big bullet Mt Everest will have lost its luster.

Some can handle added recoil some cannot....
Ideal weight would be 420gr at 2150fps to whatever they can handle....450gr is too heavy......420 to 430gr is perfect......ideal sd for dg game and penetration max for even elephant from any angle.....

Sounds spot on, 420 odd would be perfect. The 450 launches at around 2000fps (so slower than advertised) in my cz404J. Also not sure Norma produce them anymore.
