Has anyone used 450 grain Hammer bullets in there .500 Jeffery? They claim you can load them at 3000fps which would be 8992 pounds of energy at the muzzle. I’ve attached the Hornady ballistic calculation.

There is some word out there of poor opening at those speeds with the hammer hunter. Most people are saying use the shock hammer for close range hunting. Hammer even opened their Hunter bullets hollow point up a little to try and correct this.

At long ranges should be awesome.

Depending on what you want to shoot going 600gr bullets could be better option....

Agree. I shoot 570g TSX's at 2300 fps. A little more powerful than the 500 NE which no one has ever said is underpowered.

Didn’t consider the 600’s as they seem to be in short supply. 540/570’s seem to be available, but the 450’s seemed unique as light for caliber and my rifle has the twist for them.

Given the absence of everything else except Hornady 400 gr in .423, I'll likely go with their 400 gr Shock Hammer. Shock hammer is supposed to retain more weight, about 80% or so, than Hammer Hunters, which (according to mfg) retain 60-70% of starting weight.

All the hammer bullets are designed to shed their nose and basically penetrate like a WFN bullet, at least that's my take on it.

I and many others have had great luck with the .510 caliber 570g TSX. I can attest that it still opens up 225 yards (I killed a cow elk). I have no experience in Africa but I believe it's highly regarded as a buffalo cartridge/bullet as well. Nothing wrong with a 570g A-Frame either.

I will have to look into getting some, I’ve been happy with their bullets in other calibers mostly because they feed well. Also found a .500j load using the 647gr. TSX made for the .50 bmg…have to see what the magazine lets me get away with in terms of length.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
