I’m buying a Rifle in 416 rigby to use for dangerous game, I looked on MidwayUSA and they have some ammo on clearance, my question is, is it suitable for buffalo and other dangerous game? It’s Grizzly Safari brand so I was just checking if anyone had any information on the brand or such. Thanks!

Note those boxes only contain 5 cartridges per box. So they still are $7.50 per cartridge, about the same as the Barnes ammo with 20 rounds per box. It looks like Midway had to correct their math and made it look like a sale price.

Yes I saw that, the 20 round box of Barnes on their website is $9.35 per round. I just figured if there was nothing wrong with the Grizzly ammo I would purchase it at $1.85 per round cheaper since it contains the same actual bullet.

On Grafs it’s $8.50 per round so still $1 more expensive. I’m not worried about an extra dollar but if it’s literally the same projectile and Grizzly isn’t known to have any issues I don’t see the reason on paying more.

When I bought my Rigby few years back, I had a hard time finding any ammo in Alaska and sort of fell into a last minute buffalo hunt with a couple,e local friends after a gent in their party broke his leg less than 4-weeks out. i bought three different boxes of new-old stock federal premium since it’s what i could find, and stoping in to spend time with my brother in Denver on the way out, ordered several more boxes shipped to him.

By the time I left, I’d shot and chrono’d several offerings from Federal, Barnes, and some custom/semi-custom loadings from Superior Ammunition and some Safari branded company. In my Rigby, the factory Barnes not only shot the most accurately, it was the most consistent for SD/ES across all them, and was really spot on 2450fps in my rifle with 24” barrel. It shot the stuff so accurately and Barnes was well more reasonable than Federal premium, after that hunt I had my local shop order me 2-cases of the stuff. It remains one of the few rifles I don’t handload for.

I wouldn’t hesitate on the factory Barnes…but also see zero harm in trying the Grizzly to see how it shoots for you.

That's a good price and Grizzly makes good stuff. If you don't buy it I might

Thanks for the insight, the rifle I’m getting the ammunition for is that Merkel Double from Chuck you gave me some information on a few days ago!

Feel free!

I’m probably going to go with the Barnes ammo off of Grafs so I can get tsx bullets and solids with the same brand to hope my POI isn’t too far off. Grafs somehow had 1 day shipping to me last time I ordered so I was definitely impressed.

Ok. Midway did have both TSX and solids at the same price though.

Is the double a rimmed 416 rigby

Chuck was originally going to drive that Merkel down to me in Soldotna. I told my buddy I’d run several different Rigby factory loads through it to help him know if it happened to regulate with one of them..since I have like 4-5 partial boxes I don’t use.

I’d ship it to my bud once finished and he’d pay shipping. and Chuck and I would get a range play date, he’d have a chance to shoot a few of my Heym doubles and I’d get to shoot his William Cashmore 577. So we were both a bit sad when the rifle wasn’t what he needed.

I once heard a story from a PH about a client who smuggled Bolivian bugger sugar onto camp with 416 Rigby ammo. Unseated the bullets, filled to a compressed load and reseated. Useless on a buff, but I guess selection was based on that large capacity case.

See if AmmoSeek has anything you like

He shot it the other day with some factory Hornady ammunition and at 50 yards the two barrels hit 2 inches apart, I’m pretty satisfied with that. He said that your buddy changed the front sight for a fiber optic sight and that the gun shot low at 50 yards with that new sight. I’m going to buy an original style front sight off of New England Custom Gun to hopefully get it shooting back at the correct height for the close range.

Hendershots has custom ammunition in many different options for under $10 per round and they can get you where you need to be with regulating.

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
