I’m considering a return trip for plains game next year. I’ll be using my .270 for most game. My initial list includes Impala, Blesbok, Zebra, Wildebeest, and hartebeest. I’d like to add Giraffe and will need something a little heavier. Im considering a Ruger No 1 in 405 Winchester. Is this a logical choice? It would be an easy decision if 400 grain bullets were readily available but I’ve not been able to source anything in .411. I’ve shot Woodleigh in the past but don’t see them available anymore. There are lots of .410 choices and I may try some to see how they shoot, but may be stuck with 300 grain bullets. So, back to my question, enough gym for giraffe?

If I’m buying another rifle, then it would need to be a 375 H&H. It would act as a nice backup for your smaller plains game if you still wish to take the 270. It will also save you from buying yet another rifle when you decide you want to hunt buffalo later.

Every hunter of Africa should own a 375.

No buying required. The 405 is already in the safe.

I’m not a ballistics guy, but a giraffe would be shot at very close range.

Sounds perfect.

Check out HAWK bullets: https://hawkbullets.com/index.html
I use their bullets in my 405. I also use their 410 Diameter in my 450/400 NE for practice and hunting wild boar/pigs. They shoot very good and have done an excellent job on game

Tanks for I'll check out some of the options. The sectional density just seems a bit low on the 300 grain bullets to ensure adequate penetration.

The .405 would take nearly all the game in Africa with quality bullets and a steady aim.

I fully plan to take my 45-70 in the same capacity.

You just have to share your harvest pictures. As my dad told me when I left for war, “give ‘em hell”.

I will be looking for a set of these when my .505 is done... sadly not cashed up right now for these. :(
Need anything in trade?
Cheers,

what kind of velocity does the 140 grains list, curious how they would fit in with my current 130 gr, supply of 270s. maybe a pic of the box data listing vel. and drop. Oh and complements on that ammo belt, nice.
