Howdy all! I've been fairly absent on here over the last few months. Work has been crazy, we are in a period of unprecedented growth at my company. I am now managing 8 inspectors over 15 states, all while managing my own inspection territory while we look for my replacement! If only I could get 2 salaries.....
I've also taken to competing in strongman competitions. I enjoy training in the gym, the competitions give me a goal to set sights on. If I'm not working or hunting I am probably at the gym!
Sitting at 38 days out from my 2026 safari, leaving May 5th. I will be taking the entire month of May off work, we have 17 hunting days planned. Hunting with Scot and Katie Burchell of Burchell-Wolf Safaris. I've hunted with Scot's dad and brothers down at Frontier in South Africa. Starting in the Caprivi for cape buffalo for a week, then heading to hunt two areas in the middle of the country near Etosha.
Four plane rides going over, 3 to return. STL to Newark, Newark to Johannesburg, Johannesburg to Windhoek, Windhoek to Katima Mulillo. We will drive from the Caprivi down to the other hunting areas then fly back to Johannesburg out of Windhoek.
I'll be taking my trusty 30-06 model 70 which has been a faithful companion on many hunts, and I picked up a model 70 in 458wm for buffalo. Plains game on the menu will be eland, kudu, red hartebeest, mountain zebra, and I wont pass up a big warthog! My 30-06 shoots the factory Nosler 180 grain Partition load extremely well, so that is my old standby. I will be taking Buffalo Bore loaded 450gr Barnes TSX and factory Barnes 450gr banded solids for the 458. It's shooting both of those loads quite well.
My wife is coming with me, we have some side excursions planned as well. Etosha and the Skeleton Coast and who knows what else. We have a half day and overnight in Windhoek so we will see where that leads as well. Depending on the hunting, she would like to see Victoria Falls, so if the buffalo comes early, who knows. I would not mind seeing the red dunes in the desert or even the town of Swakopmund.
The excitement is building to it's crescendo! I've already started a bit of packing and getting things organized and ready. All that's left now is working, waiting, and shooting.
Hope you all have a great weekend!
Dan
