6.5x55 & 7x57 are proven performers and the best choice in metric measurements.
270 Winchester & 30/06 are proven performers for everything in North America if you prefer imperial measurement.
I have friends who have hunted literally everything in North America with each of the four above...
375 Ruger is the most suitable all around cartridge to come along in a century.
There's literally nothing on earth outside its capabilities.
I've got a custom BRNO 21 375 Ruger in the works as we speak.
I’ve got a 9 twist and a 8 twist.
I think the sweet spot is going to be in the 8.4-8.7 range for balance of accuracy, pressure, velocity.
If a rifle manufacturer would pair up with a ammo manufacture to work on development of faster twist barrels and higher BC bullets for the upcoming century...
I corresponded with Cal quite a bit over the years but we never had the timing right to meet up face to face, including my dropping by his home in Willow (unannounced and impromptu). Cal bought a couple double guns from me over the years and I bought some books and periodicals from him. He was a...
There's nothing short of thick skinned DG that I wouldn't poke with a 150 Partition.
I haven't loaded any A-Frames or SST's so I can't speak to them, but I do plan to try some A-Frame 150's, Partition 160's Accubond 165's & 175's and some Woodleigh 180's. I've got 270's in 8 twist, 8.5 twist...
I have the 23" stainless laminate the same as johnnyblues. I've taken it to Alaska a few times and love the indestructible nature of it. Plus I don't cry over the bumps and bruises it gets in the plane, boat and bush.
I strongly recommend replacing the hockey puck Ruger calls a recoil pad with...
I took a set of Vortex Furys to Kodiak and got rid of them as soon as I got back.
The glass quality is abysmal.
My son brought my 30 year old Swarovski SLC 7x30’s and they saved the day.
Time spent is hours glassing and split seconds ranging.
If you’re trying to stay in that price range...
Certain situations that I hunt demand open sights.
Most of my rifles are so equipped but also have the capacity for a scope, save my Winchester 94 Takedown with a Climn’ Lyman peep sight. It has stood the test of time.
With NIB Ruger rings I put witness marks. Vertical lines lightly stamped or cut on the right side of the rings catching both top and bottom, 1 on the front and 2 on the rear.
Ruger factory rings are very good for what they are but Alaska Arms rings are the way to go, especially if you plan to...
If you handload you will love the 6x45.
With 55gr bullets it has about a 200 FPS advantage over the .223.
With 85gr +- bullets it becomes a viable hunting rifle for game up to 400lbs or so.
A .223 will work too, but it’s sooo boring.
I got mine back ASAP
They replaced the sear and the firing pin spring.
I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet. Work keeps getting in the way of having a good time
A buddy of mine from NH had a Savage 99 in 358. It was as near perfect a bear gun as you could ask for.
Just when I thought I had everything I need, I guess I need to get a BLR now.
I’ve been using a custom molded in ear set from Tactacal Hearing for several years. I’ve been well satisfied with the hearing enhancement and the suppression.

I saw a VX-3 1.5-5 illuminated offered several years back but was never able to put my hands on one.
My son and I both have VX-R 2-7x33 firedot illuminated scopes and no problems to report. Probably the best optics on the market for the money right now.
I had heard rumblings of a recall so I just called Ruger and was told that they have issued a service bulletin, not a recall.
The reason I was given was that they may have assembled some rifles with a part that may not be up to Ruger’s specifications.
Call or email and give them your...
Depending upon where you are hunting, you are just as likely to bay a leopard on the ground as tree it. Dog hunting is a close range game and if a person is spending the coin for such a hunt they should be as prepared as possible. That goes to practicing with iron sights, red dot or low power...
I’ve been using a Olight S1 Mini for a couple years. It can run on a USB rechargeable li battery or a cr123. It has 4 brightness settings and is plenty bright at the top end. Waterproof, shockproof and super compact.
Best of all, it’s a handheld with a pocket clip that doubles to clip to the...
If you put a bad shot on an animal, the animal doesn’t care how big of a gun you used. I’ve watched as poorly hit animals absorb 45 caliber and 12 bore bullets to no effect. Just as I’ve watched animals simply roll over and die after being hit properly with small calibers.
The two dog...
@Scott CWO The board is near perfect. I doubt it has been shot very much. That’s one of the reasons I purchased it initially.
I bought it to send to AHR for a custom build. I decided to go a different direction and never did anything with this rifle.
I’ll soon be posting a 1909 Argentine...
My friend Sam Ruben was a one gun man and his choice was the 6.5 x 55 which he carried everywhere from Alaska to Africa from the 30’s through the 80’s.
He tried to explain the virtues of the 6.5 to me but I was too hung up on the .308 to listen. Ahhh the ignorance of youth. It took me buying...
I have a Ruger Alaskan 375 Ruger that I've carried a bit in AK. It's hard to beat for the money. Worthwhile improvements are Alaska Arms QD rings and MPI stock.
As to ammo, it's hard to beat the versatility of Barnes TSX 270 grain bullets in either the H&H or Ruger. Doubletap loads that bullet...
@Tra3 I found the optical quality lacking plus the adjustment rings don't lock which leads to constant changes in focus. I find my 30 year old Swarovski's are far superior optically
Both of the OP's options are good choices.
I personally favor the VX-R 2-7. I put one on my son's rifle a few years ago. After the first season with it on his rifle I ended up buying a few more for myself to top my .270, .275 & .375. Being 4oz lighter helps with balance on the rifle and is...
I bought a set of Vortex Fury and took them to Kodiak this past fall. I got rid of them immediately upon returning home. I'm glad I brought my 30 year old Swarovski 7x30 SLC's as a backup, which became my primary.
The new generation Leica and Swarovski seem to give the best overall performance...
I bought this some time back to build a custom on. I decided to go another direction so I'm passing this on. It's in sound original condition. I have never shot it. No pop up peep.
$950 shipped CONUS to your FFL
I can tell you first hand that a bear shot over dogs can not tell the difference between a 30/30 and a 300 Win Mag and I've witnessed some really iffy shot angles taken with a 30/30. All were with cheap cup and core Winchester and Remington ammo. I never could see a practical difference in...
The hunting in MO is OK. It’s the people and the way they run the state that is the problem.
I’m booked to hunt Moz with the Duckworth’s in 2020
‘19 will be spent in cold climates with hunts in ID, NV, ME and Greenland
I have a fair variety of rifles and calibers but am trying to streamline...
Greetings from purgatory a.k.a. the Third World state of Missouri
I’m originally from New York state. Moved to Michigan in 1987 for better coon hunting. Changed residency to Vermont in 1992 for better bear hunting with dogs. Changed residency back to NY in 2002 for work. Moved to MO in 2005...
