Go Fund Me for a Safari?

I don’t have a double, let alone a nice one. Now I need two Go Fund Me’s.
Dammit. Now y’all have me down GoFundMe rabbit holes to see what people are willing to beg for. People have actually posted for gun funds…

VA disability ratings have become a scam and entitlement with an entire industry developing around getting veterans the money “they earned” or “they deserve”. I know the VA challenges extremely well.
I too know the BS that is VA disability ratings .... it's been over 25yrs since I went to the VA for evaluation, as I sat there with Men who visibly had endured literal hell, I walked out & never went back.

& I whole heartedly agree with your reply to the OP

This thread leaves me speechless.

I dont know how to describe it?

Odd? Surreal? Strange? Unusual? Unprecedented? Outlandish? Perplexing? Is that serious?

No Go Fund Me October!

Acting in good faith:

There are some give away hunts from time to time on the forum such as this one:
Chance is 1:1000, but nevertheless chance it is!

VA disability ratings have become a scam and entitlement with an entire industry developing around getting veterans the money “they earned” or “they deserve”. I know the VA challenges extremely well. Not saying that’s you, but this post sure makes me think it is. I know they’re often times even harder for a combat arms guy to navigate because the pressures of being called a pussy for reporting injuries and not fighting through them. How they don’t have the resources and access to medical care/treatment beyond that of a 19 or 20yo medic assigned to your squad or platoon who rations Motrin like tic tacs. I know someone medically retired shy of 20 years due to injuries sustained in actual combat can’t collect both Pension and VA Comp.
This sort of thing wont get a whole lot of traction on AH.. there are A LOT of veterans on this board... many, if not most have a disability rating.. several have a disability rating due to combat related injuries.. others among the "old school" are indeed injured as a result of their service, but served during a period when taking a disability rating was neither common or ever encouraged...

in short, youve got several dozen very active members here that are in at least the same, if not worse shape physically as a result of their service with the same or potentially heavier rating (Im aware of at least 3 100% service disabled vets that frequent this board that recieved most of their injuries as a result of combat operations.. 2 of them are career SOF guys).. and none of them have considered (to my knowledge) something like a gofundme to fund a hunt..

I too know the BS that is VA disability ratings .... it's been over 25yrs since I went to the VA for evaluation, as I sat there with Men who visibly had endured literal hell, I walked out & never went back.

This is nothing personal against you guys, but I almost hate seeing posts like this and this kind of mindset as much as I hate seeing posts like OP made.

It wasn't that long ago in history where vets were being treated like absolute trash. Then veterans started having the government actually honor (SOME) of their promises they made when getting kids to sign up to risk their lives and health. That didn't really last that long. The government never stops looking for a way to screw over veterans. But now there is another push to make veterans seem like scum bag grifters and freeloaders. By newer online "financial consultants", younger people that hate America public opinion, and sadly even by other veterans who want to gate keep.

I have seen some veterans I didn't think should get disability get it. I have seen people get higher ratings they probably should have a lower rating. I have seen people try hard as hell to scam and totally lie.

But way MORE OFTEN I have seen: people get lower ratings then they should, people get no rating when they should, VA pull ratings for no good reason, VA remove legitimate disabilities from their programs, VA stall until veterans die, VA doctors treat vets like shit, Govt and VA talk about how they can reduce costs that pay for veterans, veterans kill themselves because they get jerked around in the VA system, etc etc etc. I'm sorry, but the ways the VA and govt. have screwed over vets could go on for ever, and I have seen way more examples of that.

Another thing I have seen way more of: govt fraud, foreign aid fraud, Somali and other immigrant fraud, food stamp/ebt fraud, workman's comp fraud, social security fraud, social security disability fraud, disabled child entitlement program fraud, (again) etc etc etc. So, when I see people (even veterans) start railing about veterans getting too high of ratings on disability, I think people are out of their minds choosing that to be the hill to die on and thing to rail against at this point in society.

Another thing that feels like an absurd gate keeping idea is the constant trope that only certain "types" of veterans deserve VA disability. Only if you were injured in actual combat. Only if you were SOF, or a ranger, or combat arms. Or whatever other thing that sets tiers and precludes other veterans. I'm sorry, but get off your high horse. I don't care if a service member was injured in training at JRTC or something else. I have met vets that were involved in vehicle rollovers and had life long crippling injuries from training like that and during routine jumps and many other things that wouldn't meet your silly criteria.

It's not a normal job, that's why the government has to promise so much to get people to sign up, and even with that, they only manage to get 1%-2% of the population to participate at any one time. Only about 6% of the US has ever agreed to do it ever. But yeah, let's start in that sector of society to try and shame them and make sure they don't "take too much". That's definitely the biggest problem group in American society.

Yeah, OP wanting people to give him a free hunt to Africa is douchey. Trying to go after veterans like they are the "real" problem in America, and the ones "taking too much" is also something I hate to see as well. And it seems to me it is becoming more of a prevalent trope, especially with younger people who hate America and some veterans that want to gate keep.

If that is comforting the same things happen in my country with war vets, after the war of independence (Croatia). I could go into more details , but that is the point.

In our system there is no free lunch.
That is the system.
Free lunch is one thing, but African safari, is - actually - a luxury, in our way of living.
Thats is the sad fact, but fact, none the less.

@Nicholas Barcomb

I come from warrior family, with probably highest percentage of military decorations in the country, in my family.

I could not serve, because I had disability before I was to serve the army.
Thus I am fully empathic to war vets, as I have them in family, and I am writing this with open heart:

Have you considered culling hunt?

This is a model and budget level, as possible option for you:
Let us know, what is your budget at this point?

I am certain, collective knowledge of this forum will assist you to find what you can push for.

It's literally a pandemic today, normalization of deviant behavior. Just look at the No Kings Rallies and the weirdos on the streets and in politics.

It’s the implied intent of the OP that is offensive, not the concept. Most people like doing things for others, especially the less fortunate. If the post read “Go Fund Me - for Veterans or Veteran’s Safari?” It’s a much different conversation…

The concept of asking for “anything free” that isn’t needed and using an angle or excuse for putting the fiscal burden on others will seem foreign to most of us who work hard, sacrifice, have ethics, are charitable or participate in supporting others. The pay it forward concept will always resonate with those that give more than they ask for or receive.

Of course the veteran component of this post hits even harder to those who serve or served and have their own hardships, disabilities; be they physical or mental, or those who have fathers, grandfathers, children, or other close friends or relatives that served and appreciate being able to help them directly if they can or if it’s welcomed.

Society often views veterans through an idealized lens—as symbols of absolute strength, self-sacrifice, and stoicism. Seeing a veteran step outside that framework to ask for financial help for a non-essential luxury (a Safari vacation) shatters the "invincible hero" illusion, forcing the public to confront them as a regular, vulnerable person with personal desires. That’s normal, however; we should hold the very veterans that protect us, and our families, in the highest regard and do our very best to support their “needs” or see to it those “needs” are considered.

Most of us that have personal feelings about the conservation component of our Safaris, or hunts, which often culminate in providing protein to those who are hungry, or starving, or those who use the meat throughout the offseason given their circumstances, will also struggle with the duality of the often abused “Go Fund Me” scams... See how easily a good concept can be undermined!

For me it’s not necessarily the Go Fund Me or Free Hunt that makes me cringe, it’s tying it back to being a Disabled Veteran, on a fixed income, etc. An African Safari is a luxury expense, a hunting lease, a gun/bow, a truck, ATV, etc are all luxury expenses that you can survive without. To try to use one’s service as leverage or to sway support so they can do something is wrong and disrespectful to those who also shed blood sweat and tears.

If the OP started a Go Fund Me for an African Safari and left out the Veteran part I’m not cringing. I’m not donating but I’m at least laughing and wishing you luck. If he did it to send a different disabled veteran or a Gold Star kid on a Safari it’s a VERY different conversation, but in this frame it was self serving based off his prior service.

The OP opened the door to the disability/lawyer topic. You might feel it’s gate keeping but I assure you it’s a bigger issue than any of us are aware. I meet a lot of Veterans through my work. At least once a week someone asks me if I’ve got my 100% like it’s a badge of honor. Had people tell me to claim this, say that, contact XYZ. I’ve had someone bring it up in front of a friend who’s a triple amputee due to an IED in Kandahar. I was at a local carnival/fair earlier this year and started BSing with one of the recruiters next to where I was. I saw his combat patch figured I’d see when he was there, which battalion/deployment, etc and see if he knew some buddies (which he did). This is going on and I overhear one of the other recruiters tell a young HS/College kid about VA Disability. How by serving 1 enlistment and documenting every little cough or paper cut he ensures tax free disability income for life. Chalk that up to my recruiter lied to me or one heck of a “sales tactic” to encourage someone to enlist.

In my initial post, I even stated “Not saying this is you”. I don’t know the OP from Adam. I don’t know his disabilities, I don’t when he served (I can loosely speculate based on age but that also depends on initial entry date/age and length of service), where he served, or what he did. Frankly I don’t care, that’s his business not mine. I am keenly aware every branch and MOS has a purpose. I know with 100% certainty I’m still here, along with many of my friends because of those support guys and other branches. The mechanic who maintained the Warthogs, Apaches, Dust-off’s or Spooky’s kept em flying, the ordinance tech kept it armed, fuel tech had it topped off to stay on station 10 min longer, cook fed them, and finance paid them and without any one piece in that puzzle I or one of my friends likely aren’t here today and that amortized across every day.

Call it gate keeping, call it whatever you want. I understand and have seen the hardships veterans have faced first hand. They’re difficult because there was an abuse and that makes it harder for those who truly need or deserve it. Not saying someone needs to be SOF, Combat Arms, a medic or anything cool because the munitions specialist loading the planes could’ve had something fall and crush their foot, the cook could’ve gotten burned in a grease fire and needed Skin Graff’s but to think there isn’t an abuse of others is naive.

Again not saying the OP is abusing the system or doesn’t deserve anything he’s getting. I do however standby the comments about cringing at the thought of a self-serving Go Fund Me based on being a Disabled Veteran to go on a luxury trip, and how the idea of that makes me think the above might apply to him. To further expand upon what @mdwest said trips are often given away. Dave himself had an outfitter donate a hunt as a door prize for his annual gathering. We’re talking 1:50 odds, I can’t speak for everyone but if I’d won that hunt Dave, the outfitter and I would’ve been making a plan to let a Veteran or Gold Star kid who’s never hunted Africa go. I know another few attendees would’ve done the same thing because we’ve all been blessed to have hunted Africa before. Luckily the winner was someone I’d met and talked to earlier in the night and who’d never been. To top it off he served in Regiment.

I have refrained from replying multiple times. I will keep this brief, and I’m not even touching the veteran angle. I do not have any social media presence (other than here). I deleted my LinkedIn because I never used it and became annoyed with vendors etc. contacting me. With that background, I do have multiple friends that will text me a link to a GoFundMe numerous times a year. What they send are not due to tragedy, but similar to what we are talking about. I always respond with “The republic is lost.” I am only half joking. Asking others for money has become so easy that people don’t even think about it. There is no embarrassment or shame. I will leave you with this, can anyone here (over 50) envision their grandparents asking anybody for a dime? I can assure you that my grandparents would have starved before they would have asked anybody for anything. They would have died of embarrassment if they asked for money (before malnutrition claimed them).

Dude’s avatar is him with a freaking caribou and he wants others to pay for his African safari?

No way that’s legit.

Great troll, though

I think you missed the part where I typed "I went to the VA for evaluation, as I sat there with Men who visibly had endured literal hell, I walked out & never went back." .... Where in my comment did I disparage Veterans?

I do not want to derail this thread, however you are monumentally misunderstanding my view.

The facts are my view is as @Mtn_Infantry stated in his initial comment, and to paraphrase - I signed my name and that choice was mine alone.

I cannot speak to the reason why others joined, but I did it in 1990 when it was "peacetime" & literally pissed my Daddy off! I thought he was gonna stomp a hole in me, and so much so I told him in front of my Grandmother, hoping she might save me. With a look of extreme disappointment, I'd never seen & a voice I'd never heard from him, he said one thing, "Why?!". My reply, "Because I wanna know if I got what it takes." He shook his head and walked away ..... See, my Daddy was vehemently against military service, he lived through the terrible times during & after the Vietnam conflict. He lost dam near all his Friends, plus he knew and regularly preached to me about the corruption that was/is the MIC. Despite, I was young, dumb & wanted a challenge, so I signed up. Then "peacetime" was no more.
There was a lot of positives while I served, but there was just as much bad. I got a challenge, but it came at a price, but the facts are I didn't pay in as much as others. The facts are I went in for selfish reasons, not for some altruistic ideology of service to my country! No, it was because I wanted to find out if I was tough enough. What I found out was, I was an idiot, and my Daddy was right! Then my selfish endeavor got booted and I got a heaping helping of humble crow pie. I was no longer there for myself, nor "my country" I was there for my Brothers.

Facts are, I appreciate when someone finds out I served and says, "Thank you, for your service" , but actually I don't need it, nor do I care for it. As I stated, I volunteered for selfish reasons.

Moreover, I don't need a lecture on the gov't/MIC corruption, the corporatocracy or the failings that define the VA, because I know, and more than most. I've spent over 30yrs in the gub'ment - its a shit show & voting won't fix it.

Furthermore, I am part of a Veteran out reach group in my region, in addition to frequent visits to the regional Veterans Home near me. I see the good & the bad.

If a Veteran gets a disability, AMEN! They deserve it, full stop!

In my previous comment, I'll admit I probably shouldn't have made it. The thing is, I know how stressed the VA system is, and supposedly I qualify for a disability, but I just can't put myself in the Q , knowing there could be a Veteran with more or worse going on. If that offended you, well, I don't know what else to say .... I guess you had to be there.

I'll end with this, I appreciate your sentiment, there are Veterans who deserve it, and you are a gentleman for voicing how you see it.
