Hello all. I have a November hunt in the Omay for Croc, Hippo, Tuskless and Buff. I would appreciate any ideas, thoughts and/or pictures of your croc or hippo trophies.
Pretty undecided at this point, although I am very intrigued by a hippo skull/glass top table. And maybe leather made from some of the skin??? Project ideas from the leather? How does hippo leather look for gun cases, belts, shoes, etc.
Croc rug? Skull mount? Full mount?
I am wide open for suggestions and appreciate any and all thoughts.
Thanks
Jody

My hippo was mounted as a shoulder mount, it made a decent mount, but it is one of which I disposed of last year. There isn't a lot you can do with a shoulder mount on a hippo. What I do have, and what starts most conversations, is the hippo skull I have sitting in the corner.

I had my croc mounted lifesize, it was an 11' one. I cannot tell you how many times I have wished I had a euro of its skull and been done with it. It takes up a huge amount of room.

I hunted out of the Ume camp last September there in the Omay with D&Y, they have some big crocs up there! Maybe you can get yourself a land based hippo, I did that with them last year, that's a pretty good hunt!

Good luck on your hunt, I'll be in the Savé Valley in November.

I was so impressed by my first Dry Ground Hippo hunt which almost got me I was going to get him mounted, lucky I didn’t as it turned out he was young with small tusks, but was going to get him done like this !

You could do the Croc like this.

Not really, just joking, but full mount coming down the wall looks good, can’t find that pic right now .

Found one similar.

If you look into the cost of a full mount croc I think you might get some sticker shock. In the US a 12-14 foot alligator can cost $10,000-$14,000 to mount. I'm sure that would be a lot cheaper in Africa, but the shipping back is going to be horrendous. Someone on here was talking about doing that maybe last year, not sure what came of it.

Those two skulls are up there with some of the coolest euro skulls. I like the photos on here of the hippo euro glass end tables. That is what I would do with the hippo. And I would likely set the croc euro skull right on top of that glass table.

If you get shoulder mount and full mount I would definitely be looking hard for a good taxidermist with a long track record. Both animals have a fairly high rate of underwhelming quality taxidermy. Sort of like wolves and cats. There are a lot of bad examples out there.

A hippo skull looks amazing as a table. I need to go look at some more pics of those.

This may be a good way for me to go. I do have some space, but this wouldn't use it all and I do think it would look great. Thanks

@Sarg Thanks for the pics. I love the full mount, but agree. Cost and space may make that prohibitive. And the area I am hunting is known to produce huge crocs. I want to do a trophy justice, but do need to be aware of cost and space prohibitions.

@Sabre Thanks. Good food for thought. The table with stacked croc skull is a great and unique look that I do love.

Keep the ideas and pictures coming friends.

I love the hippo skull glass topped tables. But I’m realistic about space etc. if I do anhiooo hunt I will prickly do one of the wall displays with all the tusks arranged in it. I think those are really cool.

Something like this.

That croc head mount had me rolling..... I didn't see the caption under it! It looks like one of the bounty hunters from Star Wars.

Mount the trophy croc vertically to achieve maximum appreciation of his size and power. You may have to put a large curve in his tail depending on ceiling height keeping his eyes between belt and chest level. A good hippo shoulder mount is hard to beat.

I did a shoulder mount of my biggest gator, and if and when I hunt a Crock, I will do something like this.

hippo skull is a powerful presence in any trophy room. The glass topped coffee table can be very elegant and tasteful. crocs are a great animal to hunt but have not really seen any taxidermy work that did the animals justice.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
