Safari Hats

OFTEN IGNORED RULE:
Men should not wear hats with more personality than they have.

____
I don't know if Jeff Cooper hunted in this hat, but it's hella distinctive.

I have never tried rolling up or folding. They perform real well in hot sweaty weather, I had the Rand hats in 112 F weather in October in Zim.
Oct in Zim is about as bad as it gets. If it worked out OK for you there -thats good enough for me. Thank you for the tip

Cheap boonie and prescription sunglasses keep me good. If the brim shape isn't to your liking, cut a little nick in the outer rim and insert about 12" of 12ga copper wire into it, you can do whatever you want with the front brim and it'll hold shape.

My head is a big bulbous balding bowling ball (that was a fun alliteration!) that I definitely have to protect from the sun but I also struggle to find sizes that fit well. I usually travel pretty light so I prefer hats that I can pack flat in a carry-on bag whenever I'm abroad, fishing or hunting. For years I've favored a casual Aussie-style fabric slouch hat with a snap brim.

The same hat with the brim down while dripping buckets in the jungle heat of south Louisiana. I left it under a plane seat traveling from Zambia to Johannesburg. I miss that hat...

I currently wear one by Conner Hats of Australia (left below) because they make them in the XXL size that I need.

The hat on the right is an Outdoor Research Papyrus that is really lightweight, breathable & provides good coverage.

Occasionally I'll also where a Legionnaire-style cap with a neck flap. I always have prescription sunglasses on since my eyesight is less than spectacular.

I always carry a Buff as a backup...

It’s very hard to proofread your own writing your brain skips right over mistakes and sees what it thought you wrote
As someone who used to write for magazines a lot this is absolutely correct. I was always taught to write then do something else and go back and read it a few minutes later.

It’s also much harder to proof read on a screen vs printed text.

My fingers were on autopilot & I typed a homonym just because the voice in my head verbalized it. Occasionally I will get stuck on stupid & do something dumb.

Back when I was in college (before word processors & spell checking) my English professors were particularly harsh: A single grammatical error would automatically get me a full letter grade reduction. So I've always been an overly harsh editorial critic of my own writing because of previous PTSD from trying to achieve perfection on essays hand-written in black ink.

I still have an AH post from about a year ago where I used the word "adverse" instead of "averse" that haunts me to today... ;)

PS - Apologies to @rookhawk for putting your thread on a tangent with a self-deprecating joke. Now (hopefully) back to Safari Hats! :D

I like the KUIU foldable so much I bought 2 spares. I have a big head and love that they make an XL, plus the fact that they do not make you hot at all.

I owned a Stetson once, but felt like Betterinthebush, from post #2. I stick with short ball caps, not the old billboard style, heads too small. I still have trouble even with a short hat. My daughter got this shot, as the thorns picked my hat clean off my head.

That is one of the reasons I like Rand hats that are stiff. They protect one from thorns. Other reason is so my ears do not get sunburned as they would with a baseball cap.

In places like Uganda and a lot of Masailand that is open a wide brimmed hat works but it's still a PIA for travel. A ball cap or a crushable canvas hat is much more practical. I was in camp a few years ago and a gentleman showed up with an outfit right out of a Clark Gable movie. After the first AM in the bush following buffalo tracks the hat and the safari jacket disappeared never to be seen again.

I don't like wearing hats, and I got the skin cancers to prove it, although a plastic surgeon did a great job rebuilding my ears. I no longer look like Dumbo.

I normally wear one of those wadded up boonie hats hunting. But, I just have to tell the truth, the most comfortable hats I have ever worn are the plastic, full brim hard hats with the ratchet. They really breath in hot weather, and you can very the liner from a cotton welders cap to a true winter liner. People would look at you strange out hunting. Handy for berry picking too. And water to wash your face.

Oh, and water dish for the dog.

This guy was in my feed this morning. I think he’s right about the shape:

I personally like the Stetson Gun Club line, specifically to Catera that is no longer made. (You can find new old stock for way less than msrp if you dig)
He’s just downtown about 20min from work.

Nice brim for sun protection and the top is ventilated and crushable. If you want a bigger brim go with Aussie breezer grande. I hate skin cancer….breezer grande shown below in florida

Thank you for the LIKE on my old post. It brought back memories as I lost her a year and a half ago, at 18+ years.
