Rolex- the stupidest, lamest company

I retired in 2008 always wore a watch my world before then revolved around what time it was ! After a few months was at the second house. Put my Rolex in the medicine cabinet and it sat there for 14 years. Findlay when the house was sold brought it back to the main house and it sets in the safe.
Its nice not having the weight on my wrist....bad enough carring a cell phone when I do.

Was scrolling and ran across this. Do you agree?
Well it hits home for me.

I wear the same G-Shock (Casio) I wore in Afghanistan 15 years ago. I replaced the battery around 2015 because I took the watch apart to clean it out. I then didn't replace it again until a few months ago. It also sat in drawer for two years at one point. Pretty sure if the world ends in a nuclear war there will be some cockroach still wearing it around.

Separately, I love Omega for the connection to the Apollo program (as an engineering nerd) and recently went shopping for a Speedmaster. I got overwhelmed by all the reference numbers, the guy trying to explain all of the differences, and gave up. So that's accurate too.

Also pretty confident this is the least expensive watch posted in this thread. I'll take that with pride.

The only Rolex I’ll ever own, was my great grandmother’s. It has that Nuevo style to it that I like, and for an over 100 year old watch it still keeps fairly accurate time
Gumpy

PS, the broach there was hers as well, one diamond and six pearls, gold setting, but missing the malachite piece
This is beautiful, aged nicely.

Never had a wristwatch in 45 years .....still breathing .......As for Rolex etc .......never understood the allure.

I had a phase where I didn't wear a watch, because time is everywhere, right?! But at some point, I got tired of asking or pulling out my phone, so I went back to wearing one.

As to the allure... there are so many things to behold when it comes to the movements. The concept, design and manufacture - how do people even come up with that?! Imagine, mechanical time keeping devices go back to the medieval period. Since then, it only evolved, things got smaller and more accurate. Many moons ago when I started my apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic for commercial trucks, no engine part was smaller than my hand, haha. So, when I see these micro mechanisms inside tiny watch cases, I'm fascinated by it. The precision these things are made with and the sheer accuracy they can achieve, crazy.

The modern times have disturbed this romantic picture a bit, as many brands are pushing their own history and heritage, focusing on their brand cache over everything else. That alone would not be such a big problem, but it gets worse, and I feel like how many are trying to achieve that is the problem.

Some brands misrepresent their products, some engage in market manipulations, some participate in fraudulent activity to the point where they should be criminally investigated and some flat out lie to their customers. And if your brand experts cannot distinguish a genuine item from a fake item and shares them with others, even approves of them, well, that's just embarrassing. There are many reasons why we shouldn't give our money to many of the Swiss brands, but we all have to make that decision for ourselves.

My stainless Submariner was my college graduation gift from my father and mother back in 1987. I've been wearing it almost every day for nearly 40 years now.

My son recently expressed interest in an Explorer (36, 39, 40) it doesn't really matter. He would like a watch with "character" (no band, slightly scratched up, etc., just as long as it were still waterproof, kept good time, and had real Rolex parts)

If you know of one for a good price, please PM me. I would really like to get one for him.

My mother made zippers and my father sold tractor parts, but they came up with $2K to buy the watch.

(They also made the same offer to my brother, who wanted his Buick Regal paid off)

I still have my watch...

Noah,
I might be interested in the 470 Woodleigh Softs if the price is right for the entire lot. Are you planning on going to the Tulsa Gunshow in November? If so, perhaps we could meet up.
