Eland - Who Loves Hunting Them?

I have not hunted Eland yet but want to. I think I will use my impending .350 Rigby and I'll load Woodleigh 250gr Protected Points for the job.

I am considering booking for 28 or 29.

Never shot one but I dream of a free range tracking hunt on them. Probably somewhere like the Kalahari in Namibia?

One of the most enjoyable Hunts I’ve ever been on was tracking Eland in the Sand. I took a beautiful bull and my wife also took a really nice bull with NKWE Safaris last year. Want to do it with a bow next time

I did end up wounding the first bull I shot on this trip. Grass was really tall. Didn’t realize the mass of a bull shot high high in the shoulder In no man’s Land tracked it for 10 miles….

Look at that Ruff! Congrats!!

I chased Eland in Limpopo for three straight days and could not close the deal. I’m 100% hooked.

Where do you hunt them? This makes a huge difference.

Northern Namibia just below the redline in the Mopanies or to the east in Boesmanland/Maroelaboom area !!!! Heaven heaven heaven. Hard work sandy soils no koppies or elevation gains, so it is you and the tracks. Sometimes the wind is your friend and sometimes it hates you.

Eland numbers have exploded over South Africa and Namibia in the last 30 years. From Cape Town( yes they walk around some sections of Table Mountain National park) to the Angolan Border they are everywhere.

My favourite meat to bring home and a good hunt. Like a old Kudu bull an old Eland bull on foot is not easy.

Better than Buffalo hunting??? Similar until the first shot has been fired in the real thick stuff. Much easier in the open of the Karoo or Kalahari where you hunt them like Oryx.

But a group of 4 Eland Bulls and a herd of 4 Dugga boys will both be very awake. However I think Buffalo that live in areas with lots of Lion is a different ball game.

Last year I got a massive bull on day one of a 4 day hunt. This year in 5 days I did not get one opportunity. I have done trip to Northern Namibia that I was successful on the arrival day and doing a short walk from the shooting range. I have also hunted a 8000ha farm with 500 eland and not getting a shot in as the wind was crazy for 4 days. Just to arrive the next year and shooting a bull on day 1.

My all time favorite! I have chased all 4 species and taken multiples of each except Cape Eland. LDE is my favorite!
"I have hunted the Livingstone’s eland twice: once with my father and once by myself in Zimbabwe. One was in a conservancy in 1999 and the other in Chirisa in '90. It is my absolute favorite hunt, and its meat is my favorite as well. Incredibly difficult to hunt, with no comparison to other antelopes, kudu included. A true ghost. It sees us like a mouflon, winds you like an elephant, and hears you like a red stag.
The first time, shot by my father in Chirisa with a .375 Winchester Model 70 African using a 300-grain KS bullet (a bit too soft) from behind. It bolted wounded, but I managed to lean out from a hill and place two 285-grain solids right into its shoulder while it was running, using my open-sighted Beretta O/U express rifle in 9.3x74R... It then stopped behind a bush, already dead on its feet, and I finished it off from 10 meters away. I was well-trained back then...
The second one, which I hunted alone in a conservancy, I shot on the second-to-last day after exhausting tracking sessions that had almost made me lose hope. I hit it at 250 meters with the same rifle, but this time using a 293-grain TUG bullet behind the shoulder. It staggered, and I fired another one, again behind the shoulder. At that point, it bolted, but after 20 meters, it was already down. Seeing us approach, it got back up, leaving a pool of blood, and after another 30 to 40 meters, it stopped again, leaning against a rock. It took off again at a trot, but it was too late to continue the pursuit, which we resumed early the next morning, finding it dead after two hundred meters. One of the most beautiful hunts I've ever experienced, right up there with elephant and buffalo. A truly special animal.
An acquaintance of mine had the luck of hunting the Lord Derby eland 47 times. To him, it was the number one of all the trophies he had ever hunted around the world!"

the girth on those tree trunk horns is impressive. congratulations. What were you shooting? I see a nice clean shoulder entry wound dead on target. Im curious how an animal of that size reacted to the hit? cheers

Eland hunting is one of the most physical hunts one can do. Hour after hour, mile after mile, day after day, of tracking in the heat only to be busted time after time.

Persistence "might"eventually pay off!

It would be good if everyone could add. rifle, calibre, bullet used and range. Handy information for those yet to hunt Eland I think.

Good idea.

I took both bulls with Ruger 77 RSM in 416 Rigby using 400 grain Swift A-Frames & Barnes Solid Flat Noses.

Both bulls were in the 100 to 120 yard range.

Two shots same Shoulder
First shot was a little high, 30 minutes after I placed my second shot in the same shoulder a little lower and he walked about 5 paces

Borrowed a camp .375 H&H don’t know what bullets…

You can see both shots in the picture

nice. Your shot placement looks pretty good but angle of penetration is different when target is standing. That is one big animal . Those huge ridges and worn tips tell the whole story. Thanks for sharing the details.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
