My tally qd base on the front of my mod 70 has the back screw just spinning and not solid. Surely this isn't stripped but I have no other idea. Thoughts? The front screw on that base is tight and good.

The threads on the tap may be deep and the screw is not deep enough? I had that with a set of custom Talley bases and a model 70. A longer screw worked.

I hate to say it but I have 6 different sets of Talley QD rings. 4 of them the screws have stripped out. I have emailed twice for replacement which they have sent for no cost. But I’m looking to move on to another brand. Not acceptable IMO.

First- remove the screw that won't tighten and look at the threads. If it is stripped what's left of the threads will be flat and shiny. If the threads are intact it may be that the screws are mixed. The screws for the front base are shorter than the ones for the bridge. A screw from the front isn't long enough to reach the threads in the bridge.

I’m have had a couple strip out myself
But I’m to cheap to start over with a new brand

IMO, either the threads on the tapped screw hold in the receiver are stripped or the screw is too short to engage the receiver threads or the screw threads are stripped. You could try to run the appropriate size tap into the receiver and retry a fresh screw. Or a longer screw. When I was repairing facial fracture, if a screw 1.5 mm screw failed to hold, the set had emergency screws of 1.8 mm or 2mm or some slightly larger diameter to grab the bone in an over-sized hole. Bone holes are of a specific mm size without tapped threads. The drill size might be 1.1 mm size. Large bone sometimes is tapped but these small screws are for non-tapped holes. Tell me how your project is going. There might be an easy fix for it. I hope you are not screwed. Lol.

Get a 6/48 bottoming tap to clean up the threads in the receiver. Be very careful not get the tap in a bind and break it off in the receiver. Lube is your friend. Then screw a new 6/48 screw into the hole to make sure the threads are good. Go easy. Do not tighten it at all. You are just checking the threads. If all that is good re-install the base with the correct length screws. Check with Tally. Use a tiny, tiny bit off blue or purple Loctite or install them dry. Whatever is your preferred method.
Good luck. Just go slow and easy.

Well Tally is shipping me two new screws. No charge. Great communication online.

The threads are stripped on the screw. I completely did it myself. They do not prefer blue loctite because you need to reduce the torque by 25%ish when using it. They just prefer dry and 25lbs on the Wheeler.

Great customer service!

Thanks RSL. I wasn't sure if a 6-48 tap would be the correct size. A broken tap remover is available from Brownells. Just in case a tap is broken off while chasing the threads. I hope it doesn't happen.

So i need to do this just to remove any metal shavings/threads that are down there? I am about 95% sure the internal threads on the receiver are fine.

Yes, clean the receiver threads with a bottoming tap. I use a blast of WD40 in threaded hole to blow out any crap the tap leaves behind. WD40 because it's harmless to everything. Then you should remove the WD40 with alcohol or acetone, on a q-tip, so you have a clean dry hole for your new screw.
;-)

By the by, Talley sent me a package or replacement screws absolutely free. They worked perfectly. Huge fan of their customer service.

I have the same exact issue on a new model 70 i installed talley bases on, was only toquing to 20lbs, feels stripped.

Pull the screw out and see if the end is "shiny" versus having threads. If so, give them a call or email. They are tremendously helpful.

I think forum prohibits making reference or giving personal references to PH/Outfitters that don't advertise on this forum.

But you can call me. I would be happy to discuss Cape Buffalo .
