Do Not Use Safari Specialty Importers

This is who handled my leopard permit. Would highly recommend regardless of who does your importing.
He did my Leopard as well and Wyatt was able to combine with a previous Safari. I know both he and Wyatt are friendly because we all chatted at the DSC Summer Expo.

Future CITES permits I’ll have Jerad handle and SSI handle the customs. Seems the best solution to me.

I do want to clarify from my original post that Wyatt did not completely cease communications during my issues. He did respond to most inquiries, but it was usually quite delayed as compared to my prior experiences with him 2019-2021. I did try my best to avoid overburdening with calls/texts/emails. However, if an inquiry went multiple days/week without a response then I would send a follow up communication which I think, as a paying customer, is reasonable.

Poor communication is frustrating but can be caused by multiple things. We all have things come up in life and that can alter how we communicate in our professionals lives. Not saying that was the case with Wyatt, just saying I understand and can certainly forgive poor communication.

It was the outright lie about my CITES which pushed me over the edge. It was a gut punch to sit with two USF&W officials and have them tell you there is no record of an application after you were just assured that the permit was in the final stage before approval. It was beyond disappointing and complete violation of my trust, especially as a repeat client.

Thanks…I do have a giraffe which I understand requires a CITES permit. Wyatt responded to my most recent emails…. Here we are…
There should be no problems with a giraffe. CITES permits are issued by the exporting country. It’s the US Fish and Wildlife import permits for certain CITES that are causing issues discussed here. Not the CITES permits themselves. Giraffe doesn’t require special import paperwork.

When you say there are no storage fees, can you clarify something for me?

When a shipment comes into its first port of entry, it needs to be inspected before it can leave the airport storage. If it has a follow on airport location (such as ATL then to Chicago) it accrues no airport storage fees for the time it is at its first port, ATL, waiting for inspection. When it gets to Chicago, the importer can than pick it up the same day. However, if it comes into its final port first, like Chicago or NY, or ATL, and isn't moving on. The airport charges storage fees while it waits for inspection before an importer is allowed to pick it up. Even if that importer has a bonded warehouse.

So does SSI just offer a flat rate and they eat that storage fee expecting it to average out over many clients?

I know when I looked into them for my most recent shipment; them and the taxidermist I was using offered a "flat rate" option where there would be no "surprise costs". That flat rate option was about $1,000 higher than other import/ship/export options. But, I'm guessing that extra is to cover their airline storage fees.
Yes, essentially you pay a flat rate which is a set number of day for the storage. SSI cost averages it among all shipments. I’m sure some are easy and same day, while others could be weeks or more. Every shipment I’ve had including one with another customs broker had storage fees. With a majority of my current shipments containing Big 5 Animal I’d rather account for potential storage up front even if not needed. Looking at other posts I see others have experienced them as well, and continue to experience them with many having issues with shipments being located.

I've used SSI 3 times with basically no problems.
The only issue was my second shipment a couple years ago. a muntjac and cwd from England that sat in New York for an unusually long time. Almost 6 months if I remember correctly. Was starting to think it got lost.
Last shipment from Denmark a couple months ago only sat 6 weeks.

You have used them 3 times, and 2 out of the 3 times your shipment sat for a long time for no reason. You describe that as "basically no problems"? A shipment sitting for 6 months for no reason, or even 6 weeks for no reason isn't really providing a good service.

There should be no problems with a giraffe. CITES permits are issued by the exporting country. It’s the US Fish and Wildlife import permits for certain CITES that are causing issues discussed here. Not the CITES permits themselves. Giraffe doesn’t require special import paperwork.

Is there a place to read which animals need the USF&W import permits for certain CITES animals?

It's easy enough to look up which animals are where on the CITES tiers. But I am unsure where to see which ones need the additional USF&W permits that cause more problems.

My ivory delivered from my 2017 elephant hunt this week and I used SSI to import. I wish I could tell you that I had a great experience with Wyatt. I didn't.

I don't like writing this, but I will. First, here is some background. I first met Wyatt's parents, John and Karen, at the first AH dinner I ever went to in 2015. I met Robert and Rosella Quartarone, the original owners of SSI shortly after and used them with great results and customer service. Due to the history, I wrongly thought that I'd be treated well.

Now to my elephant import. With the ivory ban the permit didn't get issued until August 2023. There was the ban of course and then USFWD backlog so I get this date and have no issue with it. I also think it's important to note that Robert was still helping at this time although I think the company had been sold to Wyatt. or the sale was in process.

The invoice was issued in September of 2023 and I was stunned at the amount for shipping to say the least. The mark-up was excessive. I pushed back and Wyatt tried to basically tell me that "it is what it is" and that was the going rate. What Wyatt wasn't aware of is the fact that I know a fair amount about freight and I called a buddy to get a detailed quote to get a quote for HVC (high valued cargo). After sending Wyatt that quote a lower and yet still excessive rate was sent ten days later. I turned that down too and told Wyatt I'd pass on the ivory before I'd pay the amount. Three months later in December a third quote came, still way overpriced, but a 25% discount to the original quote, a significant amount of money.

For those that don't know, when Robert and Rosella owned the company, they were committed to getting the best shipping rate and doing everything so the customer didn't have to. It even said so on the website (since removed). That's what you paid them for, the knowledge and advocacy. Many of the importers/taxidermists/outfitters didn't like to deal with them for exactly this reason. It took money out of their pockets. This advocacy is no longer the case (and my bad for assuming it was). Now you'll be told that the high price is reasonable and should be paid. Whether Wyatt doesn't understand the shipping business or there is another reason he is OK with customers being overcharged I do not know. But he assured me, incorrectly, that I was getting a fair price from the beginning.

Moving on.... At the end of December, the invoice was sent and begrudgingly, but immediately paid. Two days later I received a message from Wyatt that the funds had cleared and he'd let me know flight details. Well, four months later in April I followed up as I'd heard nothing. The response was that the permits had expired, but that he's have new permits in a week, or so..... Two more months with zero communication and I reached out again.... Not to worry Wyatt said, shipping no later than the weekend.... My August follow-up, the same.... October, November, January, February (now 2025), March, April, May, all the same and not once did Wyatt reach out to me during this time.... You get the point. Finally, in November 2025 I received a message that the permit had been renewed. No additional communication until April 2026. Delivery finally made in June.

The utter lack of communication and follow-up from Wyatt is beyond horrible. This would have NEVER happened when Rosella was running the day to day business. I also question Wyatt's knowledge of the business and commitment to the customer. Whether this is incompetence or a total lack of caring only Wyatt knows. What I do know, is that I'd never use or recommend Wyatt Fetner or SSI again.

Side note: The packing from TCI was poor. Naked ivory wired to the bottom of the crate and salted feet and ears thrown loosely on top. No packing material at all. The change of damage due to rubbing shouldn't have been there but it was. There are some rub marks due to this.
He wanted to charge me 14,000 dollars to ship a cape buffalo shoulder mount, impala shoulder mount, sable shoulder mount, gemsbok shoulder mount, duiker shoulder mount and kudu shoulder mount. Said price was so high because it contained one of the big 5. Have it sitting at a buddies house in Pretoria while making other arrangements.

No storage fee as they have their own warehouse. Something to consider
They just use a company called “cargo tours”. It’s not actually SSI’s warehouse and they have no employees in New York.

They then “co broker” your shipment with cargo tours. Nothing more than a marketing company really at that point. At least in my mind

Many on here have just used cargo tours with out SSI’s help.

It’s interesting.
I used SSI successfully and would say the service was good. It was just simple PG annals.
But they are expensive as they need to make money on top of them using a company (cargo tours).

I feel like I have seen this at least a few times on this thread, other threads, or other forums. I would say this is the main thing that has concerned me about them in reviews and gives me the most pause. Other things can have reasonable explanations, but this stuff is the most concerning to a prospective client.

This is what I figured and makes a lot of sense. As the client it is a pretty big gamble when it comes to the airline storage fees. It shouldn't be, it's a gross scam, but it doesn't seem to be changing. I had seriously considered them for the most recent shipment because the guaranteed price, though generally higher, might be worth it sometimes to not have to worry about gambling with the airline. I will admit, reviews I read about issues with communication and untruthful responses about permits was mainly what kept me away.

The way it sits with what he has done so many times, you either you do business with someone who lies and has no ethics or you don’t. It’s clear from the multiple people who had problems with him that he lies consistently. Some people seem to be ok with still doing business with someone like that, definitely your choice. You may have different experiences and you should decide how you want to proceed going forward. But I think he’s a piece of lying dogshit and I will shout from the rooftops all I can to keep people from experiencing what I did. It’s a simple as that to me. If I can save 1 person from any grief, than my job was done.

When did you shoot them? I am on year 3 for my Zim elephant, still no permit.
Have you asked for proof that your permit was applied for? Just curious if you know 100% it’s in process. Maybe you mentioned where it’s at in the process in prior posts and I just missed it?

What troubles me the most out of what PAGuardian said, is that Wyatt stopped responding to his calls and emails. Now maybe PA has been hounding him with constant calls etc (I am NOT saying that you are doing this PAG!) but even if that's what he did, there is no excuse for ceasing communications with a paying customer....that's why I think its a good idea for Wyatt to chime in here. Let's hear his comments on this matter

As far as bailing, that's a tough call. Has he been answering your calls? What is your feeling on what he is saying to you?

Like I said before, I never met him before, but he imported my Leopard Buffalo, and Croc over 2 trips and he was awesome

Who knows
So the fact that he told both of us that our applications were in and that we were just waiting on it to be approved, and all of the other flat out lies as we followed up with him for many many months, only to find out that we had no application, that’s not more concerning than the lack of communication? It is hard for me to wrap my head around that.

If not doing future cites permits is what it takes to fix his business, than that is great and he should do that. I will however never use someone with no integrity. I got burned by that lack of integrity, a good friend told me when I was first starting my Africa hunting that Wyatt was shady and something was off. Did I listen? Nope, I continued to use him and things went well until they didn’t. So go ahead and keep using him and if you get burned, just remember that a “good friend told me so”

Not that I’m aware of. I’m sure there is if you ask conservation force or adventure permits they’d supply you a list. Lion, leopard, elephant, bontebok, probably rhino I’m sure.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is kdp59935@gmail.com in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
