Gun Case Locks?

What do you guys recommend for a pelican type rifle case? Keyed lock, I presume?
 
I used some cheap harbor freight locks. I figured they are just secured through pieces of plastic lops on the case. They can just cut or melt the plastic to get I. Ti the case if they want, and not even mess with defeating the locks.
 
Thanks, gents. I also just found the other long thread that I was looking for from a few years ago.
 
Does anyone use combo locks? I'm always super paranoid I'm going to lose the key.
 
Abus 88/40's that are custom keyed. I use those on most of my pelicans in every single keyhole. Works great when I'm flying cross country on a pelican case of MG's.

If my case will permit though, I prefer Stanley 24/7 60mm. They are more robust, but slot in well and are beefy.

Reminder: all locks are 100% penetrable by someone that knows what they are doing. You're just trying to dissuade someone from easy access. The above locks can easily be defeated by the lockpicking lawyer, but they will work for a flight.
 
I buy keyed alike padlocks whic generally gives you 2 keys per lock - 12 keys in total for 4 gun case locks and 2 ammo case locks. You can have several keys in your possession at once!
When you have to do the customs checks it is very quick to open each lock in turn. Massively quicker than putting a combination into each lock in turn.

What about forgetting the combination or misplacing the scrap of paper you have written it on?

I was a company clerk in the Army and responsible for securing the monthly payroll, cash back in the early 60's, in the safe in the orderly room on payday. One day I just drew a blank on the combination after locking the payroll in the safe. The entire company was assembled and I could not remember the combination. Not only embarrassing but my First Sergeant was chewing my ass with all his might. I finally went down to the mess hall and had some coffee and the combination came back to me on the way back to the orderly room.
From that day I made sure to give the Company Commander and the First Sergeant copies of the combination. That was probably the most embarrassing time of my military service.

All that to say I have always used keyed locks since that cluster.

I’m not worried about forgetting the combo as long as I can set it too what I want.

But that does remind me of an interesting story. When I got my gun safe it came with the combo pre set. I was having trouble remembering it but had it written down. Well one day I locked the paper in the safe. My regular clays gun wasn’t in the safe and it was months until hunting season so I didn’t panic but was mildly worried. Every day or two I would try a couple of combos but for the like of me couldn’t remember the number. This went in for about 3 months and I was on the verge of calling the safe company to see what my options were.

Well one night I had a dream that I opened the safe. When I woke up I went straight to the safe and used the combo from the dream and opened it on the first try. The number was in my head it just needed to find a way out I guess.
 
Enforcer Abloy 330/25. You can order them keyed alike, about $75 per lock. I have six of them total. Four for the rifle case and two for the ammo box.

This is the Lock Picking Lawyer going through a similar lock. Imagine having the confidence to buy a lock without a key! That said, they are very good locks and worth the price.
 
On my gun case I use 6 Wilson Bohannan Locks to secure my gun case. They are all keyed alike and HD Brass.
I keep 1 keys in my pocket while traveling , 1 key in my back pack for safety of losing a key. If I taking a carry long I will put an extra key in that carry on. TSA will not have access to my locks.
 
Went with all non-TSA combo locks set to the same combo for my trip in August (Pelican so 4 locks in total for the case). Carried a couple of extra locks in case of mishap. Locked my Condition One luggage with a TSA lock (it contained my ammo). Of note, when I got to Tambo the Condition One went to the "large baggage area" and did not come out the conveyor. Apparently that is the way they do it with larger, plastics protective luggage. Luckily I was able to find it with the Airtag I had in it (also had one in my gun case).

I'm looking to order the Pelican 2-rifle vault case that has four spots for locks.

What non-TSA key locks (all same key) would you guys recommend? The shackles on the Abloy 330/25 locks someone mentioned are too large to fit the lock-holes on this case.

Also, has anybody had an issue with TSA cutting off their non-TSA locks on their checked rifle-case once it's been inspected? We'll be flying on Delta, if the particular airline matters.
 
I used 3 digit locks available off Amazon. 1-3/16 inch 647BLKEC2. The rules state the case is only to be opened in your presence so can't imagine cutting locks off but interested to hear if others have had that happen. I flew Delta and they were cool with everything.

I’m glad to hear that, but when you say “they were cool with everything,” do you mean the TSA personnel or Delta employees, or both? Thanks.
 
Delta and TSA, SA police also. I did use Gracy Travel's VIP service at Tambo. Delta was very chill, probably because there were lots of hunters about and they are used to it.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
