Greetings all! I’m a new PH in South Africa and a big fan of varminting and predator control .

I have gone out calling jackals several times and had an absolute blast and this lead to me buy a caller .

I am now looking to get some caller sounds to call in jackals and caracals and would even like to get some caller sounds for hyena if possible .

Can anyone help me out with this ?

I have been a lifelong Predator Hunter, and have called many wolves, bears, and mountain lions as well as many, many, coyotes. Even though I can't hunt them here in Montana I've also called in a few grizzly bears. I do almost all of my calling with hand calls.

I am confident that if you stick with the basics of rabbit and fawn distress you will have wonderful success. Most prey animals make a very similar sound when being attacked and that is what you are trying to mimic to encourage predators to come in.

Good luck on your adventures it will be a blast.

Does your caller brand have a library?

What file format does it use?

I have had good luck calling coyotes, foxes and bobcats using simple rabbit and bird or mouse distress calls. I would imagine those might work equally well for Jackal, Caracal and other predators in Africa as well. The benefit of mouth calls is they are always variable as opposed to the recorded calls being the same all the time. FoxPro does have a nice digital electronic call with the ability to download additional sounds. It has birds, and bunnies as well as squirrel and mouse prey distress calls. I have never seen African specific calls for it but never looked for them.

Cheers for the advice , I must say wolves have always been a dream hunt .

I’m currently using a primos caller , I may upgrade to a Foxpro in the future , that seems to be the most commonly used one , but I know they can only use fox pro sounds where as my primos caller can use MP3/ MP4 sounds .

I’m very eager to get my hands on some mouse and bird distress calls as I know these work very well for our caracals which I suppose are like an African bobcat . Thanks for the advice . I know Foxpro does have some Africa based sounds as a few guys I’ve called with use them .

Out of curiosity, where are you located? If you're obliging, I may give you a call and book a hunt with you. Ya got many baboons where you are at?

My buddy in SA used a Foxpro to call Jackals but I have called lots of Red Fox, Jackals, Caracals & Hyena, both Brown & Spotted with a simple mouth caller.

I have used recently the “Original Cow Talk” by E.L.K Montana it does a perfect Duiker in distress call & has them running in from South Africa to Guinea Bissau !

Well not from South Africa to Bissau but in those countries separately.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
