What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

Mostly because it shows how (nearly) useless a knife is on safari, but also how absolutely necessary it is to still have it in the event it's needed. Better to have and not need, than need and not have.

All the rest is just looking a knives...which is also just as fun.

Maybe a collaboration project?

You knock out a blade and put your markers mark on one side.. I’ll install handles and make a kydex sheath and put my markers mark on the other side? Then we start sending it around the world and give it its own thread to document its journey?

@Mountainshadows would you want to get “in” on the project? Maybe you do some of this your world class leather for it?

After a few years and as many hunts as we can get documented in the journal, we auction it off and put all of the proceeds toward a wildlife conservation effort somewhere close to @UNTAMED KNIVES …
 
IMO, a knife may always have a place in the bush. Now, if you rely entirely on your PH or trackers, that's a different story. But when you're out in the wild, so many unexpected things can happen where having a cutting tool can be useful not necessarily for protection from an animal or for cutting off an elephant's tail.:)

I think it can certainly be argued that you don't need to carry a big Bowie or a Khukri, but having a small, practical utility knife or multitool with a good blade is, in my opinion, just common sense.

It would be cool if someone could pick up the blade in person from @UNTAMED KNIVES and deliver it to @mdwest so that someone doesn’t have to pay the shipping and tariffs.
 
You carry a knife in case you need to cut something and because traditionally people carry knives on their cartridge belts. Do you need a knife probably not, but even a big knife doesn’t way that much, you aren’t sheep hunting at 12,000’ the weight is not going to kill you. Why do people wear sports jerseys to games or to watch the game in their own living room or at a bar?
 
I'll be in Harare in November and plan to visit Ross and pick up my AH knife to use on my hunt in the Omay. I would be happy to bring the Traveling Knife back with me and get it to @mdwest if that helps.

The traveling knife idea is very cool. I was part of a duck hunting forum that had a traveling decoy. Each member documented with a photo in his spread and sent it on to the next hunter. I’m planning on doing the same thing with one of my custom turkey box calls and have each hunter sign it.
 
You're alone off to the side of the beaten track maybe you're taking a leak maybe you woke up before everyone else enjoying the views and then you find a python constricting around your neck every time you exhale (or pick your favorite other snake or wild animal including poachers refugees political devotes et al).. but you decided not to carry a knife. It's your choice as is natural selection. There are dozens of fine examples but the choice is yours! You'll have to work harder with one of those jim shockey endorsed plastic utility knives but it will get somewhat of the jobs done. GL I'm not a big proponent of all policies out there but sometimes paying the insurance pays dividends.

That would be AWESOME!! if it works for Ross's @UNTAMED KNIVES timeline to get the knife started??
 
I suppose by that logic, I should also carry a flamethrower, a defibrillator, and perhaps a small artillery piece because you just never know what mother nature, poachers, or the dept. of bad decisions might have waiting for you around the corner :)
I’m all for insurance, but at some point we have to distinguish between being prepared and looking like we’re heading into the bush for a one-man reenactment of a Hollywood movie

No issues from my end. Will wait for the design from @mdwest before I get started, but confident we can get it done in time.
 
Knife is like parachute.

Probably you will never need it, but if you need it you will need it very badly.

I’m in Croatia hunting at the moment… will be back home and will sketch something out as soon as I get there… I’m thinking maybe something fairly small and easy that people can take anywhere.. something like maybe a 3.5” - 4” drop point hunter or some sort

I guess I am some type of feral weirdo. (@mdwest and @roverandbrew are going to have fun with that one! :LOL:). I just can't imagine not having a knife on me no matter where I am. Even if it is just a Swiss Army knife, an Opinel or a folder clipped into my pants pocket, I always carry a knife.
