Perhaps a stupid question but not used to the new South African opportunities
When you say 55#… is that “the reasonable expectation” of the area?
Is that a size limit?
I would “think” it’s the reasonable expection/average expected. I imagine some of these areas that “shall not be named” ( and I’m glad I guess) are next to or near other areas that have some truly large old bulls that don’t know where the imaginary lines are….

It is a little different that other places. The size is an actual limit that is very achievable.


You may likely see bulls much bigger, but they are off limits.

Out of curiosity what would happen if the PH estimates a bull at say 50# and gives you the go ahead to shoot and then it turns out to be 56# or higher? Does the hunter then forfeit the trophy? Or would in reality the PH only green light bulls comfortably below the limit to be safe?

I believe you're also hunting with a Parks ranger and they're the one who green lights the bull based on meeting a variety of different requirements in addition to being up to a certain size, not just the PH.

I'll defer on the exportability to the outfitter who posted this or someone more knowledgeable on the topic since nerve size varies and there's always a chance it's extremely small or has almost no nerve.

He replied via WhatsApp and I had PMd him. I wasn’t familiar with the rules of the area.
They give them basically a 10% margin of error. And like you noted, they have someone give them the thumbs up.
Very fair price. A 55# matching bull there would be a beautiful animal.
I get they don’t want you whacking a super tusker and drawing the ire of the antis etc
But… I also bet there are some 70-80#rs running around too that would be magnificent

There are probably more than a few 70-80's running around.
If it's where I suspect, there's a known hundred pounder running around and several that'll go at least 90. I think I've got a few photos from 2024

Good day everyone
My apologies for the late reply.
55 Pounds is the limit but as mentioned above we do get a 10% grace meaning we can shoot up to a 60 pounder. If we go over that then there are penalties involved. I always say judging ivory is not an exact science, but you will be shooting something between 50 and 60 pounds.
There is a representative from the reserve hunting with us, but the final call lies with the professional hunter that's with you on the hunt.
The area that we will be hunting has one of the highest populations of elephant in Africa and you will most likely see bulls that will go over 55 pounds. We have been fortunate in the past to see some hundred pounders while out hunting and that is truly an amazing site to see.
The exciting part of this hunt is that we will do a lot of approaches on elephant. This give us time to discuss shot placement and also to get you use to how these big bulls react.
Hunting these big old bulls is probably one of the most exciting hunts one can do and especially getting so close to them.
