I done did it now - Bought a Rigby.

First a well wish for a speedy recovery!

The Highland stalker is a nice rifle and the 275 will be good for most all PG.

I would use the 416 on the roan, eland , and Giraffe if it was my pair of rifles.

At least it wasn’t done by the same company like Remington. 6mm Remington, 244 Remington, same-same. 280 Remington, 7mm Express Remington, 7mm-06 (don’t think it actually ever shipped), same-same.

A John Rigby & Co. Highland Stalker chambered in .275 Rigby is the stuff dreams are made of. Heartiest congratulations.

The short throat of the currently manufactured .275 Rigby rifles prevents them from accepting bullets heavier than 156Gr by default. Attempting to close the bolt over 170+Gr cartridges and then attempting to pull the bolt back, will lead to powder spilling all over into the action.

The solution is to either:
A) Use 140Gr-156Gr bullets
Or
B) Run a 7x57mm Mauser reamer through the rifle so that it essentially becomes a 7x57mm Mauser in everything but name.

The 140-156Gr bullet is perfectly adequate for up to Kudu sized game.

I just sent it to a competent gunsmith who opened up the throat to easily accept my 175 grain bullets. cost me $300

Did NOT know that. SO - I have a question) You say use 140-156 and you say 170 and over is bad. I am having Hendershot make handloads of 160 Grain Swift A-Frame with the Hornady .275 Headstamp brass. Is that OK?

Wow! I did not know that stuff existed! Looks like its not sold by Rigby to the US. I would LOVE to get some of that.

I got some from calgary shooting center, canada's rigby supplier, but cant use it in my 1899 rigby, I will pull the bullets and powder and reload with 173gr.

love the head stamp though vs using 7x57

Before anything is done to the leade I suggest that you take an empty case, seat a bullet in it just enough for the case to hold it (way out). then slowly push the "cartridge" into the chamber until it meets resistance. pull the cartridge back and see if the bullet has been pushed into the case. Don't push so much that the bullet sticks in the rifling, but work the process until the bullet is pushed back into the case sufficient for the bolt to close. Once this occurs remove the case and see what the length from case base to spot on the bullet where it contacts the rifling. If you have a micrometer, measure the diameter of the bullet where the contact occurs. If you want to use 175 grain bullets find the spot on the bullet where it has that diameter. If the bullet can be seated in the case deep enough for the bullet to be short of the rifling without significantly decreasing powder capacity, then it should be good to go as is.
