This would probably be mainly a South Africa problem in areas without self sustaining herds. But I’m probably done with South Africa unless it’s in an open area along the Kruger border.

I’d agree with this.

It’s no different than how I look at and select what units to apply in out west or somewhere to lease for deer. It doesn’t mean I won’t hunt it, but I make sure my expectations are inline with reality. I want to know if an area has both the genetics and environmental conditions required to produce an animal of a certain caliber if that’s what I’m after on that hunt.

Can a 400” Bull Elk be killed in an OTC unit on public land? Sure, does it happen? Almost never, especially when 350+” bulls make up less than 0.01% of the annual bull elk kill nationwide, and if you take out private land, it’s a significantly lower number percentage with most being killed in limited entry units.
