Help Needed: Travel & Tour Guide Recommendations for Vienna, Austria and Romania before Brown Bear Hunt

Do any of you fine folks have recommendations for tour guides/ services in Vienna, Austria or tour guides/services in Romania?

I already have all accommodation booked. A friend of mine who coordinates stuff like this gave me a quote for a guided itinerary in Romania with daily rates WAY above the norm, not to mention pricing for Vienna tours that was truly shocking. I am willing to pay for a nice experience, but within reason. Therefore, I would like to explore some other options.

I am booked to hunt brown bear bear with Marius and his team at @HUNTROMANIA this October. Before the hunt, I have five nights booked in Vienna, then a flight to Bucharest on the morning of 10/13.

My plan is to:

1. 13 OCT: Have lunch in Bucharest, meet tour guide, then ave tour guide drive me from Bucharest to Brasov on the 13th, stopping to visit some castles along the way
2. 14 OCT: Have tour guide drive me from Brasov to Sighisoara, tour me around cultural sites on the way and in Sighisoara
3. 15 OCT: Meet Marius' team in Sighisoara and begin the hunt
4. 19 OCT: Have tour guide lead me around Bucharest

I did some touring in Austria after my ibex hunt a few years back, and like you found it to be expensive.

That being said, we had private tours of the historical sites and the experience was unforgettable.

The Czech agency that arranged my hunt made all of the arrangements in Vienna.

If you are using Gracy Travel, they can set up anything you want through their European partners. That said, the sort of all day drive abouts you are wanting are not cheap. We have done them in Austria, Spain, Italy, and Croatia. Just the base cost of fuel and wear and tear on a vehicle starts calculations off at a pretty high baseline. Even Hiring a tour guide through the hotel for a morning or afternoon walkabout or private tour of a Museum will be north of 200 Eu - but for us, worth every penny.

When in Vienna there are two things everyone should see. First is a day trip to Melk Abby with lunch along the Danube. https://www.stiftmelk.at/ A Unesco World Heritage Site, it really is a wonder of the world. The other, also a World Heritage Site, are the Heuriger wine taverns for a long lunch a crisp Austrian white or Frankish Blau. Your concierge can get you there and back. Just keep working on that wine appreciation thing.

I have never used Hubertus, but they have an excellent reputation.

Its been a few moons since Ive visited Austria... but I spent a month there back in the day for work and got a chance to see a lot of the country.. Its a wonderful place.. full of friendly people, beautiful sights, interesting history, etc.. Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna is worth touring.. I was fortuneate to have a local cop with me that served as my "tour guide".. his knowledge of the history of the building(s), down to the story behind the gold eagles perched at the gates was facinating..

Just outside of Vienna is a hilltop that Napoleon directed the battle of Wagram... It was a neat experience to visit and see the battlefield and get an understanding of what happened during that battle and the seige of Vienna (second seize) if youre into military history or battlefields..

I can't speak for Austria, but renting a car and getting around Romania after my hunt with Marius last October was very simple. You will need an International Drivers Permit, but they are easy to get through AAA.


Braun Castle, Peles Castle, the Salina Turda salt mines, etc. all have free guided tours at specific times. Bucharest has a few interesting places, but I recommend the Natural History Museum and it's life sized replica of Trajans column. @Red Leg would enjoy the thorough history if the Dacian Wars during the tour of the Museum.

If it was me , having a turkish coffe and a croissant on a certain mountain/ hilltop there a few moments of history calm .

Beside if one got ticket , I would looked at the stable tour of the Spanish Riding school . I think that would been more interesting than the actual show for some people .

Been to Bucharest several times and the Museum is indeed excellent. We also forget that Bucharest was once called the "Little Paris" before Stalin's minions took over. The old city is still worth exploring. We have a wonderful floral still life by Stefan Luchian from an antique shop in the old city. But sadly, unlike most of Eastern Europe, Ceausescu and ilk built the typical hideous communist style high rises in the old city as well as the burbs to hide the many churches and other examples of Romania's "decadent" past.

I know Vienna very, very well. If you want to DM me your interests I am happy to give you a list of top sites, restaurants etc. that will suit your taste.

I have only toured their with a guide once, and he was a disappointment. I don't think you really need a guide there, but that is your call.

Use some sort of AI to tell you what the sights are. Tell the same AI to make you an iterinary for either bus, self drive or trains or a combo.

In 2026 it's dead easy.

Going to give you very basic advice about Europe.

The food is good, but not all restaurants are good. You need Euros. No one wants to take a credit card. Tip is 1-2 Euros. Beyond that and it is upsetting to people. Use trip advisor to see what others have said. What's the risk in a bad meal? Beer and bread will be good if nothing else.

There will not be parking unless you go super early. If you can do things that do not involve parking you will enjoy it more.

You don't need the language. Everyone speaks English or darn near. Use your phone to translate what you want to say. And show them but not give them your phone. Mine will actually repeat it back to them.

In May I was on my way to the Czech Republic. I stopped at the last Bavarian butcher shop smoke house, I went in and there was a stunning 18-20 year old gal. I asked for the house special salami and sausage to go and she filled up the bag. None of it was good. Kind of unsual, but it was cheap. She was beautiful and I gave her a compliment and she gave me a couple of different house sausages. Also sub-par. Was like $20 American dollars for some meat, a few bottles of water and a cold Bavarian beer to take with me. I ate about half of on my remaining 2 hour drive to the hunting area in Czech Republic, but the experience was memorable. Wasn't rotten, just not what I like.

A lot of really neat experiences here are just accidents. Wonderful charming accidents.

Vienna is huge, you probably don't want a rental car there. Bus, train or taxi.

Build a list with AI, then research it and ask AI how to make it work. I pay for Grok, and I have fairly unlimited questions on it. My office pays for Genesis. Both will do the same thing. I have never used Chat GPT. I think you could get similar result.

One of the Vienna based booking agents, I can't remember the name of tried to get me to book a tour with her. She doubled the price of the hunt in Hungary and then added a 1000 Euro booking and license fee. I already had a Hungarian hunting license. So It was stupid.

Becareful. Anyone operating out of SCI directly toward Americans thinks they can get away with it. Spanish outfitters are the worst.

I am not a 5 star restaurant guy. I like local food, at local prices. If high end food is your thing, you will be disappointed. High end places can be really disappointing in Europe.

10-30 Euro can be amazing.

Sometimes 20-40 Euros is great. Always seems to work.

The 50-80 euro entree is suspect. Burned a couple of times.

80+ euro entree is for someone else to try. Burned too many times.

So, for my fellow Americans, credit cards work very well in shops, restaurants, and bistros across the continent. Never had a server turn their nose up at one even in lovely Germany. Personally, I have also been hard at work trying to change the tipping culture in Europe one server, driver, and porter at a time. It is amazing what something besides a Euro or two does for restaurant and bar service in a hotel when you are staying a few days - however much it may offend the locals not having to serve you.

Uber works great wherever I have been in Europe, and is typically much less expensive than a formal taxi. It is a great way to get around a city without driving yourself or trying to figure out bus schedules.

I absolutely will agree, with the exception of very, very high end restaurants in locales like Paris or Rome, that food and wine are real bargains almost anywhere compared to the US. We were in Venice for a week a couple of years ago - an anticipated tourist trap I had avoided for my whole adult life - and had a grand inexpensive time. Ok, the room wasn't cheap - about like the Adolphus in Dallas - but where else do you stay in a former palacio with a Murano chandelier over the bed? Candle or lantern lit waterside evening meals with a glass of champagne or spritz and bottle of wine were less than lunch at a Lupe Tortilla's in Austin with a beer.

Guides can be a great "value" if you are looking for an experience instead of just a deal. Visits to places like the Prado, the Vatican, St Peters, the Alhambra, the Doge's Palace, or St Marks can be hugely enhanced by a knowledgeable guide who will also take you to the head of the line while the Fodor's Guide crowd are waiting to rent their headsets.

Austria, I would not use a guide. It’s just to easy to get around and Vienna is very easy.

I think you have a good plan for Romania. Just make sure you make a long pit stop at Cari cu Bere in Bucharest.
