Rolex- the stupidest, lamest company

Love a gauntlet being thrown down for a debate...

I think part of the problem is peoples perception.
Rolex omega ect. Are very nice mechanical mass produced watches.

There not by any means a luxury item.
Like if see someone with a rolex, omega im like thats cool there one of 3 catsgories of people.
Ones that feel they are sucessful and its a way to try to flex.
Trying to pretend they are sucessful
And people who just enjoy a well made watch

The only two large commercial watchmakers that have within them a luxury dept. Are vercheron constantine and patek. And they make true luxury items

Others would be smaller master horologists like. Philippe Dufour. Who makes about 10 to 15 watches a year and entry price watch is about 250k.

People get grumpy alot of time when you shatter an illusion they have.
Eh, it's an interesting position, but not one I necessarily agree with.

Admittedly, Rolex, Omega, etc are very much 'entry level' luxury.

Just the same as a Mercedes, a Rigby Big Game, an Apple product.

They're mass manufactured, machine made pieces. You get very little choice on customization, they're not that exclusive, they make a lot of them. They're not that special.

However, we live in a world where you can get a good watch from Casio for about $20. One that's functionally just as good, if not objectively better than any mechanical watch. A Rolex or an Omega, or a Grand Seiko, or a Zenith, or any number of other brands is several 100x more money. For absolutely no additional practical utility.

Therefore, the primary purpose of a Rolex, or an Omega, is not to be a functional object that tells the time. The primary purpose is to provide a nice object that the buyer enjoys, thinks is special, and possibly enjoys the fact that others see him wearing it.

The marketing is set up around that, the messaging, the positioning, the managed exclusivity, the production methodologies, the underpinning technology being used. The entire strategy is set up around that premise, and as a result, far and away the most valuable part of an Omega or a Rolex... is the badge.

Hence it is, by every reasonable definition, a luxury good. If only the lower rungs of 'luxury'.

Now, you can of course go up from the entry level luxury. You've got your mid level stuff; Piaget, JLC, higher end Grand Seiko. You've got your high end stuff; Lange, AP, VC, Patek. Then you've got your really high end stuff; Small boutique brands making one off pieces, super high end complications from JLC, etc.

But all of these pieces are intended to be objects of enjoyment and possibly prestige, not useful tools to tell you what time it is. So they're ALL luxury goods.

Dr Seuss may have cracked the Rolex mindset with his book "the sneeches"

To be fair, I myself have fallen into the trap of disparaging people that like luxury items such as rolexes as status snobs but that is in itself a type of snobbery I think.

Some people just like nice stuff or things have special meaning to them.
There are snobs and showoffs but it's not universal.

Different values. I'll buy $150 bottle of good scotch but I won't spend more than $50 on a pair of jeans.

I disagree. Luxury is bespoke.
A rigby highland stalker or bg is not a luxury rifle there quality mass produced. And quality takes time and money to create.

The shikari is.
Purdey and holland and holland are. The gunmakers is ferlach are.
Luxury is bespoke. Mass produced no matter the quality is not luxury.
Mercedes is not luxury the maybach division within is.

I agree or they try to tear people down they feel are above them.

The best answer for why do xys is because I felt like it, because i wanted to, or it makes me happy.
For most things that is a criticizm less motive.

If your using logic to argue a point your open to counter arguments.
example I have a rolex because i like it and want one. simple statement no real room to debate

I like rolex because its a luxury item. you will have someone chime in its not actually a luxury item altho its a common line of thinking that $$$ = luxury when it does not.

That is both a very interesting and poor assumption to make, especially when a simple "why would you say this?" would actually open the door for me to explain further. But okay, it is what it is, and you have made up your mind. If my comment offended you, or anyone else here, I apologize as this was not my intention. On the same token, no grown person should be offended by a stranger's opinion, especially not on the internet.

In my comment I said "most," and that is probably unfair to a few, so the word "many" would have been more appropriate. I apologize for that as well.

With that being said, all it takes is research. Once you dig deeper than just brand names and public perception and realize what's going on behind the curtain, you'll soon really ask yourself if company xyz deserves your money or not. Quiet a few rabbit holes to run down to explore further. It's one thing to appreciate horology, history and adventure, and wanting to support this. It's a totally different thing to be lied to and taken for a ride. Due diligence is in order. It's a buyers' market!!

And as a natural enabler, I say buy what you like and enjoy. That's all that matters.

Have a great day.
When you lead with calling people who appreciate and enjoy fine watches/Rolex "ego driven idiots", why would you expect any other response, especially with your 7th post on a forum?

.

How long did they say the wait could be ?

.

I just returned from working in Europe and of course visiting all of the Rolex shops along the way. Precious metal models seem to be more available and wait times appear to be coming down. Those pieces are well beyond my pay grade, but I was in two locations (Prague and AMS outbound) that had a yellow gold Submariner available.

As an "ego driven idiot" I am on a waiting list for two Rolex watches.

Platinum Land Dweller with diamonds for my partner.

Basic gold Daytona for myself

Must be insecure lol.

I think alot of the people who hate on rolexes or the percieved wealthy do so out of jelousy not objective fact.
Just like most people view a basic rolex or mercedes as a luxury item just because its $$

But the landweller diamond combo is one i have not seen before looks good. Your wife will love it.

Unfortunately if one wants the green face then gold is the only option.
Yup. Limited options.

I don't wear a watch. Didn't get the bug but I had a nice titanium something years ago I picked up in the 90s in Singapore that I liked but it was beat up in my wetsuit and salt water.

I've seen a few that have gotten my attention but I'm picky. And ... Cheap.

If there was an all titanium, green or blue face, pilot config with a gmt arm, I'd be all over it.

Breitling Cockpit B50 Might Mission GMT with a titanium band would come close. I have one.

Sweet Lord Jesus.... again, making up stuff.

I said "Most Swiss watch brands are just full of ego driven idi*ts and most don't deserve our money." which clearly says brands, not customers/collectors/etc. Why would I say a customer of xyz brand does not deserve any of my money?! Makes no sense!

But I guess I should have spelled it out more, manufacturers instead of brands, I don't know. What I do knows is that I have learned to ask a question if there's something I don't understand instead of staying quiet and filling in the blanks, but I guess not everyone has.

I'm too old for this back and forth. If you care about the watch industry, go do some deeper research about what's going on there and then decide whether you want to spend your money there or not.

Y'all have a great day.

thats a shame... the stainless submariner with the green face and bezel is by far my favorite version of that watch...

I like the looks of that one. Wish it was titanium.

Tudor Pelagos Ultra has a titanium case and bracelet. Little brother to Rolex, but considered by many to have superior movements in terms of accuracy and durability. They make a few titanium watches in a couple different sizes.

That's a fantastic watch in 39mm or 42mm. Very low profile too, especially on a NATO. One of my favorite international travel watches. Easy to find pre-owned from reputable resellers, which makes them a great deal.

If I were going pure NATO, the Tudor Pelagos FXD with integral lugs for the strap would be my choice. And it's also available with a titanium case!!!

Love the FXD but I've got to have a date on my watches so I went standard Pelagos. That's just me though

Anime Slayer APK is honestly one of the best anime apps I’ve ever used. It’s packed with a massive collection of both popular and underrated titles, and everything streams smoothly without interruptions. I appreciate how well it runs even on mid-range Android devices.
