Whisky appreciation

I'm updating my review of the AE Finished Rye as I'm finishing it off right now. The juice is enjoyable to me BUT would probably be medicinal to the majority of drinkers. That's fine by me as I drink whiskey for its medicinal properties! Still, I would NOT characterize this as a traditional rye; not sure how I would characterize other than to say it sure does take the EDGE off while not hurting me. That's the best endorsement I can give it. Would I buy it again? Yes, for sure, especially if I could find it for about $80 or less instead of $100. What I despise about it is the bottle it comes in. I prefer whiskey that comes in a short, fat, squatty bottle. I don't mind a tall bottle like this, but what I can't stand is a mouth that will not pour smoothly without dripping or spilling everywhere. The AE bottle has a terrible mouth on it; have to be really careful during the pour.

@DaddyFlip the secondary prices are coming down a bit. Those are still on the high side. Eagle Rare 17 and William LaRue Weller are 2 bottles I’ll pay well over MSRP on but not full secondary for. I personally prefer the BTACs over any of the Pappy’s. Lucked out on a TH Handy a few weeks ago.

It's funny; I had never HEARD of Buffalo Trace distillery until three years ago. My first ER10 was purchased on the advice of a friend then at $100! I've since purchased several at $60 but haven't tried anything else from that distillery. I have access to Stagg, Taylor, all the Wellers, ER10/12, Pappy, etc. at various outrageous prices. If I wanted to understand the significance of BT as a distillery, what ONE bottle should I buy on Monday?

As long as it’s not outrageous Weller 107 Antique (Red) is my personal favorite. Specifically the older screw top store picks with a “NCF” (non chill filtered). They are the same as what Weller Full Proof (Blue) is today. Used to be able to get them for $39-49 regularly.

EH Taylor Single Barrel and Barrel Proof are also good choices. Even their small batch is really good.

Pappy is beyond over rated for the secondary price. If you can find it for $99 buy it, but I’d rather over pay for a Weller, EHT, or BTAC. I’m indifferent to Blanton’s and Eagle Rare. For MSRP they’re good but not good enough for their secondary prices. Only time I’ll pay a little over MSRP is if I need a quick gift for a customer. William LaRue Weller and Eagle Rare 17 I’ll gladly overpay on.

A non Buffalo Trace you should consider are the orphan barrels. Their Old Barterhouse is my second favorite bourbon next to Double Eagle Very Rare which I’ve admittedly only bought to flip with the agreement I got a couple ounces to try.

The only Pappy I have access to is $1200 currently.

Which one of them? Thats a hard pass from me but I know more than a few people who buy them for that price. When I lived in Alabama I typically sold an entire flight of them at full secondary. Covered my hunting lease and then some.

If you ever have ER 17, you'll never buy ER 10 again.

It seems that AE has created a bottle which is worse than the despised Adelphi monstrosity. That is an achievement!
 
Now let's talk about one of the smoothest pouring bottles I've ever encountered and an excellent pour in its own right. Whoever designed this bottle deserves the Nobel prize in physics or fluid dynamics or badassery. It's also short and squatty, which is my preferred format. Look at that wide mouth; I left the computer screen on to highlight its contours. It pours beautifully without spilling or splashing... so smooth. Doesn't matter how fast or slow you pour, you can't spill this. The liquid inside is infamously a blend of six of the 10 "recipes" offered by the distillery. The label says, "full-bodied, red fruits, nutmeg, cloves, subtle oak." It's the full-bodied and subtle oak that draws me to this staple. It's very warm and soothing; only downside is I generally develop a headache while I'm drinking it. I even try cutting it to 35% with water (something I never do) and it still pounds on me. Haven't figured out why it does that. In any event, I would pour lesser and greater whisks into this bottle just to enjoy the awesome transfer from bottle to glencairn.

Donkey is in distress because today was the hottest day of the year according to our porch thermometer - 102F in the shade. Miserable and haven't had rain in awhile. Hoping for a cooling effect soon.
